Draft. Pours black with minimal head. Aroma of burnt malt, oak and dark fruits. Taste is light bitter and light tart. Malty. Oak and dark fruits. Full bodied with a thick texture. Lively carbonation and a long warming finish. Overall, very good. Boozy with a bit of Belgian sugar.

Aroma: I got a bit of field berries but generally the nose hardly sticks out besides very strong alcohol. Visual is brown, almost black, with a good thick head and nice lacing. We are faced with a lack of taste here. I expected a lot of field berries, some raisins, but none of all this. Alcohol only. Unbalanced. Under my expectations for this renowned brewery. Have I got a bad bottle?

750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 2/20/2012. Pours moderately cloudy extremely dark reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big raisin, prune, apple, pear, molasses, toast, toffee, chocolate, dark bread, light roast, pepper, clove, floral, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark malt and fruity/spicy yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of raisin, prune, apple, molasses, toast, chocolate, dark bread, toffee, floral, light roast, clove, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of dark and light fruits, molasses, toast, toffee, chocolate, dark bread, floral, light roast, clove, pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance and complexity of dark malts with yeast ester flavors; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy, moderately slick, and lightly foamy mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is and excellent Belgian strong dark ale! All around nice balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on for a the gravity. A very enjoyable offering.

Light tasting Belgian strong. Pours dark brown with decent head and lacing. Aroma of booze, florals and light dark fruit. Watery texture, not much different from most Ommegang beers. Finishes with light sweetness. Soft carbonation. On tap at Blue Monk.

Bottle sample at Beoir Go Leoir. Sweet caramel malt, dark fruit, and Belgian yeast aroma. Deep chestnut with a small tan head. Musty Belgian yeast, sweet raisin-banana, light spice flavor. Medium body, soft carbonation.

Spit a 750ml bottle. Poured a dark brown color with a huge off-white head. Aroma was dried fruits, dark brown sugars, some yeasty character. Flavor was dark fruits, some toasted malt character. Okay brew, but this one was way too carbonated for me - totally masked the flavors until we let the bottle sit out for a few minutes. After that, it improved greatly.

Bouteille 750ml. De couleur brune très foncée et opaque. Nez de levures fruitées (raisins, prunes, figues) aux petites notes épicées (poivre doux, notes de clou de girofle), moyen de chocolat noir, léger de malt rôti aux notes terreuses, léger de réglisse noire avec des notes de houblon herbeux et de sucre brun. Moyennement ronde en bouche avec un pétillement moyen mais aux notes croustillantes ainsi qu’une texture légèrement crémeuse et huileuse. Goût de levures fruitées (prunes noires, figues, moyen de raisins, traces de cerises noires) et léger-moyen épicées (poivre doux, clou de girofle) accompagné de notes de réglisse noire lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute un moyen goût de pain, léger de chocolat noir et de malt rôti doux avec des notes de mélasse terreuse ainsi que quelques traces de sucre brun puis en finale l’on retrouve une légère amertume de houblon herbeux avec des traces d’alcool. Post-goût moyen-long, composé d’un goût de levures fruitées (pelures de prunes, notes de figues et de raisins) aux petites notes épicées avec des notes amères de houblon herbeux, d’alcool doux et de rôti doux.

750 ml. Deep brown/black body with a fizzy white head, reducing to small pools. Aroma of dark fruits, mustiness, plum, fig, toasted grain. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. The finishes is lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Yep, this is from Ommegang’s house yeast. A slight musty basement taste compliments notes of raisins, overripe plums and dark chocolate. Hint of caramel. Peppery alcohol erases some of the flavor in the finish.
