Huge yellowish head, fast disappearing over dark amber-red beer. If there exists dishwashing fluid with hops, instead of citrusfruit, this is how it’s going to smell. As well as some licorice, and cake. Sweet taste, cake-ish with caramel or molasses, philo dough, and of course, hops, American style, but certainly not overdone. Some bitterness from them, but mainly sweet. Warming up, licorice in the taste as well. The hops appear crude and cheap. It’s syrupy, oily but with a very thin body for B.W. It finishes very quick, and rather empty. This is a very simple B.W. But does a BW wants to be simple? A Kellerbier, anyone? Thanks for the haul, David.

22 oz bomber. Nose smells just like a barleywine! Sweet, raisiny with dark friuts and malt aromas. Deep rusty red with a small beige head; flavor is sweet raisins, a little caramelly malt, and a hot alcohol burn; not covered well; might need to sit for a year or so. As it warmed to room temp the alcohol burn lessened.

It is hard to really go wrong with a barleywine. Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured a ruby-chestnut color with a large dark tan head. The aroma is a delightful mix of caramel, molasses, raisins and light fruity hops. The mouthfeel is thick though it has a noted alcohol burn. The flavor is nice but does not live up to the promise of the aroma. The flavor is strong grapefruit, pine, caramel and raisins. There is a tangy and sweet nature to the beer but the noticeable harsh alcohol on the finish diminishes the enjoyment of this one.

This spent a little under half a year chilling out in the back of the fridge in it’s bomber sized bottle. Pour is a lovely dingy brown color, head is minimal but present, aromas are really nice. (I just love the way some barley wines smell, and this is one.) I’m picking up a sticky sweetness in the form of caramel and dark fruits. Flavor blends together very well... closely imitating the aromas of fruit and sweet. It is not without a couple of flaws however, as the alcohol does shine through in an antiseptic way towards the end of each sip. I’d like to age it even a little further next time and see how things turn out to see if that milds it all down a bit.

Pour is a very dark red with a tan head. Aroma is dark fruits with mild hops. Flavor is extremly fruity with some malts and the hops show up in the end. Very thick with some brown sugar at the swallow. Alcohol is there but not in an overpowering way. A spot on example of the style.

Nice clear amber color with thin off white head. It has a typical Barleywine aroma: rich, sweet, malty, a hint of hops and a bit of alcohol. Seems right on for the style and heightens the anticipation of the first sip. Yep, first sip and it is good. Full mouth feel, chewy. It has the sweet fruity-ness of maybe grapes or cherries. Then comes the caramel and molasses roasted malt flavors. To keep it interesting some hop bitterness is bouncing around the taste profile. The finish has a dry biscuit malt flavor along with some residual bitterness and alcohol warmth.

This filled the glass with a nice brew that had a good brown color, decent head with a characteristic hop and malt aroma and flavor. Good, slightly above average American Barleywine. I’m glad we’ve been cellaring this awhile though, I think it might have been a bit harsh in it’s younger days.

Clear deep red body, medium off-white head. Deep caramels, dark fruit, toast, and piney hops aroma. Classic barleywine flavor of dark fruits, caramel, toast, and plenty of piney, citrusy hops. Nice balance between sweet malts and piney hops, with a bit of an alcohol kick. Very typical of West Coast barleywines, and that’s a good thing.

A much more subtle and refined barleywine than I expected from this brewery, especially since it’s relatively fresh - aging would make this really good - anyway - nice ruby color and substantial, clinging lace - aroma of candy sugar, lighter fruit (strawberry), caramel and a hint of alcohol - a little thin, but not too much so - strawberry and caramel flavors mix surprisingly well - not overly sweet - slightly vinous - floral hops in the finish, with just a touch of warming alcohol, just the right amount poking through - for the price, this is exceptional - I will def. be buying a few bottles for aging.
