Pours dark amber with light tan head. Aromas of caramel, toffee, bread dough. Flavors of roasted matls, caramel and hops in the finish. The alcohol is slightly noticable, but it is still smooth going down. Full body with average carbonation and a syrupy mouthfeel.

Bottle from Sam’s Quik Shop in Durham (I think). Pours a cloudy orangish-brown with a medium head and moderate lacing. Aroma of alcohol and big malts. Odd taste. Very malty but bland and with almost no bitterness. Totally not what I was expecting given the aroma.

Bottle: Pours a crimson laced amber with a sizeable beige head. Lots of thick lacing. Aroma is rich of maltiness and breadiness. Some caramel and dark fruits. Flavor retains the malty orientation and adds a nice amount of citrus hops. Nice, creamy palate.

Cloudy amber color; almost no head. Good, sweet caramel aroma, mature, hoppy. Full bodied, rich malt flavor, sweet caramel and toffee too, some vanilla, and with the necessary bitterness for a Barleywine. A classic style excellent Barleywine.

Mmm, very pleasing aroma, hints of raisin, plum and a bit of sherry and other light papery oxidation. The oxidation is enough to give this a hint of complexity and age without ruining it. I can’t find any markings on the bottle to specify its age. Rubyish orange color, pretty dark as b-wines go, medium tenacious head. Flavor begins with a big syrupy sweetness, quickly met with a tingly grassy hoppiness, leading into what amounts to a balanced finish, albeit a big one. There’s alot of IBUs in the finish, but also alot of heavy caramel sweetness. The flavor is not as fruity as the aroma, but the raisiny fig notes, along with some cardboard, linger after the finish, which is almost slightly hot from the alcohol. This is a pleasant one, a malt leaning barleywine with touches of fruit, really is how I prefer them to be made.

(2004 at least) Bottle, at csbosox KC tasting 4/14. Bottle provided by csbosox, thanks Chris! Pour is reddish amber. Aroma is sweet malt, slight bit of hops. Taste is sweet malt, with the alcohol nicely blended in, almost highlighted. Very smooth compared to other Barley Wines I have had.

Poured a deep ruby on the border of brown with almost no white head. Aroma is all malt with hints of vanilla and liquor. Flavor is all malt with a touch of sugar and dark fruits like plum. Quite a bite on the end with bitterness from the hops and heat from the alcohol. Barleywines are typically sippers, this one especially as it is a little harsh.
