The third Flurk beer, a hefty quad with dense, creamy, regularly shaped, ‘ecru’ head and cloudy, dark burgundy-hued chestnut brown robe with small flakes of proteins here and there. Aroma of brown sugar, gingerbread, brown bread and bread crust, coriander seed, baked banana, sweet potato, raisins, medlar, dried plum, damp earth and some glue-like solvents. Sweet onset, the classic mash of residual brown sugariness and fruity, banana- and plum-like esters with a sourish basic undertone; medium carbonation, full, bit resinous body (oatmeal noticeable but subtly so), also a bit ‘dirty’ and very yeasty, over a caramelly, bready and eventually lightly toasty maltiness. Strong soapy coriander seed colours the end, mingled with clove-like phenols, a lot of bready and earthy yeastiness, a late herbal hop bitterish touch and the expected glow of ‘jenever’-like alcohol. Decent, but as stereotypical and cliché as it gets for the style; in comparison with Ox Brewery’s 12, which I tasted next to this one in an assessment of new Flemish quads, this one is a bit better executed and better bodied thanks to a more toasty malt character, so if I had to choose, I’d opt for this one, even if both beers are otherwise quite similar.
