What tames an old ale like Curmudgeon? The tender embrace of oak and sweet maple, that’s what. The result is Curmudgeon’s Better Half, a harmonious matrimony of our deceptively smooth old ale brewed with molasses and time spent aging in bourbon barrels that have previously held maple syrup. Because all counterparts should be sweet, rich and utterly delicious.

Aged sample Small, fast gone yellowish rim over amber-caramel coloured beer. Mint, caramel, maltsyrup if diluted. Again mint (!?), caramel, hints at vanilla. Flavours as from toasted sugar and ripe banana. Very slick to oily, alcoholwarmth, sticky feel. I've always wondered about the glamour Founders was bestowed by beergeeks (well OK, they came early). This is another example for what I find: really good but nowhere exceptional. Txs to KUL!

(Bottle) Brownish red colour with foamy, beige head. Malty, vinous nose with oak wood, bourbon, dried fruit, dates, maple syrup, vanilla, caramel, marzipan, chocolate and sultanas. Malty, vinous, sweetish taste with notes of dried fruit, dates, oak wood, bourbon, maple syrup, vanilla, nuts, chocolate, sultana raisins and a mild spicy/peppery bitterness in a warming finish. Full body, sweet. A bit boozy and warming, really rich and tasty, with lots of barrel character. Very nice.

Bottle. What a nice tasty beer. The perfect winter beer. Deep brown in color with not much head. Aroma was mostly maple with hints of bourbon. The taste was an explosion of maple with a complex bourbon mixed in.

Bottle from Drankenhandel Leiden. Aroma is sweet maple syrup with caramel malt, vanilla, sweet barley malt, toffee, bourbon, oak, alcohol, sugary fruits, marzipan. Flavour is massively sweet with a light bitterness and a boozy finish. Body is full with a very sticky texture. Like 'regular' Curmudgeon a bit too sticky and syrupy for my taste, extremely sweet, a warming sippin' beer.
