In the world of German brewing, Kräusen refers to the intense proliferation of bubbles and foam formed during fermentation of a young or "green" beer. And Aufkräusen (literally to kräusen it up), refers to a historic brewing technique in which some green beer is added to a fully-matured lager. This is a very old and very typically German tradition, and today even English-speaking brewers refer to this technique as krausening. Krausening brings the vibrant freshness of young beer to the more refined, austere flavors of a fully-matured lager.

Aecht Schlenkerla Kräusen starts out as normal Helles Schlenkerla Lager and matures for months in the old rock cellars underneath the brewery. Just before filling it is blended using the before mentioned "Kräusen" technique with classic Märzen Rauchbier. The result is an unfiltered, bottom fermented and amber color Märzen Lager hybrid with a vibrant and slightly smoky flavor.

RB backlog. Full on Osterjause - fresh cooked egg, smoked ham, soft white bread. Not too sweet, but with a good malt body for the low ABV, a hint of sourness, minerals, light bitterness. Thanks SinH4.

$4.20 pint can from Wine Warehouse. Woot! A new one, to me at least. Pours golden amber with a small, soft white head. Aroma is smoke, green leaves, grasses. Flavor is brown leaf, burnt wood, smoke, grasses. Tastes like a campfire - though made with somewhat wet wood. Nice, smooth.

12.4.18.
Clear, copper-tinged brass with an off-white head fading slowly to cover.
Good mix of smoke and rich malt. Honey, well-cured, aged ham and rich woodsmoke all give a classic Schlenkerla impression. Like a notch down from the marzen but obviously much maltier and richly smoky than the helles.
Tightly carbobated, malty and yet appropriately attenuated with ample bitterness on the finish mixing with campfire, slight red fruit and rich honey to highly flavorful effect. Soft and comforting yet woody, bitter and crisp on the end. Pretty fuckin drinkable. Clean, no alcohol. Both beers are amazing apart and nothing changes krausening one with the other.

2025 B. United canning drunk 8/6/25.
Yeah this is just stellar. Toffee, maple syrup, rich wood smoke. Less given to the bacon of some of their offerings. Still dry and lightly salty with a rich, malty body and insane amounts of flavor for its size.

Flaska från SB. Smak och doft av humle, malt, rök, charkuterier och torv. Rund och len, fin maltsötma, rena smaker i strålande balans. Mycket gott!

Light amber coloured with a nice, frothy white head that shows good retention and lacing. Aroma has a sweetish base of white bread and honey, fresh flowery hops and a smoked note (speck, slightly dusty) which is subdued if compared to other schlenkerlas but overall in line with most franconian smoked beers. Taste notes follow the aroma. Medium to high sweetness and average bitterness, slight sweet edge in the mouth and balanced finish, with a pleasant slightly smoked, flowery aftertaste. Light bodied with average carbonation, possibly a bit more carbonated than your usual smoked lager, resulting in an easy, even quite refreshing mouthfeel. This is a quite unique beer, i guess it could be described as a "kellerrauch". In any case, very good.
