So called because of its truly "ruinous" effect on your palate, this massive hop monster will change forever your preconceptions of what defines good beer. This is Stone IPA's big brother, and we mean BIG. We essentially began with our already-awesome Stone IPA, threw in an extra-large helping of malt, and added a lot more hops. And then some more. And then even more, resulting in a vibrant blast of citrusy bitterness that hits you on the first sip. Just one taste and you'll know why we call this indelicate jewel "A liquid poem to the glory of the hop!"

One of the first regularly brewed and bottled imperial IPAs.

Draught @ Albion. Hazy bright orange with small foamy off-white head, light floral hops aroma, medium carbonation, bitter hoppy taste that starts sweetish, full body, long bitter finish. Great IPA.

Poured honey gold with no head into a taster. The nose shows a lot of pine & mango with some sweet malts. The palate is medium bodied with light carbonation showing flavors of lightly juicy pineapple. Simple & easy IPA.

Poured from bottle cloudy orange with a one finger head. Aromas of fruit, citrus, and sweet hops. Taste is similar with a long piney grapefruit finish.

Bottle from the Stone on Tap event at BeerTemple in Amsterdam. Lacing, cream white, medium thick head over a deep orangey blonde, almost clear beer with lively sparkling. Complex and refined DIPA aroma of grapefruit, baking pork fat, freshly cut nettles, bitter honey, green tea, celery, hemp, wet hay, barbecue sausages, bell peppers - in all, less sweet citrussy than usual for the style. Clean onset of dried orange peel, sweetish peach, dried herbs and a touch of pineapple, never turning sweet but instead ’halted’ by a powerful, resiny, lemon peel-like hop bitterness, complex, herbal and spicy, drying for a very long time but still allowing some subtle, juicy malt sweetness to peep through; hint of whisky-like warming alcohol as well, just in the right place. Refinement and balance is key here, and is achieved to a very high extent. One of the most ’aristocraticly’ restrained DIPAs I tasted so far, while still retaining the hoppy force typifying the style. Impressive.

Pours a slightly hazy gold from a bottle, off-white head shows good retention and lacing. Aroma of ... i don’t even know what really, something pretty good and familiar, maybe a little pipe tobacco someplace in there, almost caramel but not quite. Flavor is pine resin, soap, some floral notes, butterscotch. Bittersweet, somewhat oily, very full mouthfeel, almost creamy. Very good beer. I’m not big on brewers shoving hops into beers the way pizza joints find new places to hide cheese on pizza, but this one does it right without overdoing it.

Another superlative beer from Stone. An ode to the NW hops, biting, bitter, pungent, resinous, hints of caramel, pine, soap. Bracing, a wake up call for your palate.
