Brown Ale with Coffee Brewed For: Pairing The Two Best Things.

Refreshing like an iced coffee, aromatic like a bag of freshly roasted beans, and satisfying like your favorite beer.

Guatemalan coffee, roasted locally, is added to our house oatmeal brown ale. Cold press coffee aromatics and intense coffee flavors are balanced by the oats in the malt bill, resulting in a cappuccino-like creaminess.

Can from DalzAle - free beer week - thanks! - pours a dark ruby with a moderate tan head - nose is whole bean coffee, vanilla, toffee, caramel, hazelnut - flavor is much drier than expected, with light roast and moderate coffee flavor (with not of the harsh acidity often extracted from the beans in some other coffee beers) - some light roasted nuts through the middle - leafy bitterness arrives late - some fruity hop notes - a touch of vanilla on the tail end - not as potent with the coffee as I usually like, but a damn tasty beer.

Draft at Churchkey. Poured a dark color, with a small tan head. Aroma was espresso with notes of mocha. Flavor was chocolate notes, tons of toasted coffee beans. Mouthfeel a bit thinner than I expected (didn’t know the style when I got it), but I guess being a brown ale it’s about on mark.

12 oz. can thanks to Tripplebrew. Used an English pint. Brown color with red highlights around the edges. Luscious dark roasted coffee bean nose noticeable as I cracked the can and pored. OOOH, nice! Taste is notes of chocolate, mocha but most of all deep, rich coffee. And if this was a blind taste test, I’m not sure I would even know brown ale was in front of me. Smooth almost silk like mouthfeel. Much like a good, weak coffee. I got to hand it to the brewers at Surly, they make great beer. If you like coffee brews, this is top notch! Can we really call this beer???

Received in trade from GPHarris, thanks for the opportunity! Pours a deep brown with garnet highlights when held to light. Tightly bubbled beige head shows moderate retention and lace. Smells like freshly ground coffee beans mostly. I try to find something else in the aroma but the coffee is overpowering my olfactory system. Taste really follows the aroma. Upfront I get bitter roasted coffee, midway through I get a hint of sugary sweetness (cream maybe?) finish is a long lingering acridic roasted coffee. Did I mention this tastes like coffee. Medium body and carbonation level, acridic bitter mouthfeel. I will preface this by saying I don’t drink coffee. I enjoy some beer with coffee flavors or with coffee added, but this one is to far over the top for me. I can’t find the beer underneath the coffee. One and done on this one.

Can from a generous trader. Pours dark brown, almost black. Tan head. Nose of smoked malt, freshly brewed coffee and roasted barley. Taste is the same. Lots of freshly brewed coffee. Creamy mouth feel. The closest beer to drinking an ice coffee that I’ve had. Full to medium body.

Very good coffee brown ale. The coffee flavor has lots of juicy fruit flavor, and the brown ale has a great nutty maltiness. It’s creamy and a touch acidic on the palate. Not too much bitterness. I’m not normally a big coffee beer fan, but this is a nice one.

I was walking around at Dark Lord Day at 3 Floyd’s in Munster, IN when I saw a can of this sitting on a random table. Drunkenly, I asked the person sitting at the table if I could have some since I haven’t had this stuff in a couple years, and he graciously obliged and poured me about 4 oz of this fantastic brew. Appearance a coffee like brown with a thin off white head. Aroma of pure dark roast coffee with bit of lactose. Taste of roasted malt and coffee very smooth but rich, highly enjoyable, can’t wait to go back to MPLS to have this again.

Can thanks to Ben! Pours a clear brown with a grayish brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma is full of roasted coffee with just a slight grain backing. Flavor starts a bit more mellow with grain and bread but the roasted coffee quickly takes over for a nice finish.
