Beer with character that is balanced and very fruity.
Schaerbeek cherries originate from the Brussels Region, and up until the 1960s these local sour cherries were used exclusively for blending kriek. Unfortunately, the introduction on the market of pasteurised and sweetened industrial lambics marked the beginning of the end of the cultivation of this superb fruit as brewers of fake lambic switched instead to syrups and artificial flavours. Schaerbeek cherries are very delicate, and the harvest is unpredictable at best. On average, we still manage to acquire one or two tonnes per year from local producers, who are now few and far between.
The lambics we select must have enough character, while still retaining a fruity side. It takes two to three months of soaking to make Kriek Lou Pepe, and due to the very limited supply of fruit available production of this superb beer is limited to a few thousand bottles a year.

Sour and tart, fruity. Red cherries, rich, intense, medium acidity. Not much funk but some dry oak. Excellent.

Sour, a bit tart, fruity. Smooth, fairly rich, red cherries, some wood and funk, low acidity. Delicious.

Bottle at Quintessence. Hazy deep ruby. Very funky, cinnamon, massive sour cherries, wheat. Medium sweet and sour. Damn I love this beer sooooo much.

2002 Draught at Moan and Dove on 8/19/2005 with Eyedrinkale and Dan Shelton. Pours a vibrant, opaque, strawberry-pinkish red, with a bit of a ruddy-orange glow to it on the edges. Head is thin and filmy and pinkish-cream colored, but well-retained and provides ample lacing. Aroma is lemon juice, lemon rinds, oranges, very yogurty/lactobacillius notes, quite sour, with some sweet cherry pulp, a touch of very dry cask wood. Thoroughly pungent and quite lovely. Flavor begins with a woody dryness coupled with the signature lacto/pedio mix of Cantillon. Eminently drinkable right off the bat, I waste no time in downing a glass and have to go for a second to finish my thoughts. . . and then a third later. Anyways, the cherries were not as tart and were, perhaps, a bit too apparent for my liking. Adding to my displeasure, somewhat, was a note of what I would best describe as "coconut liqueur". I couldnt shake this taste from all three samples. It had a syrupy, fruity, yet dryish/sour flavor to it that I havent found in any other Cantillon beer. Could this be the syrup addition? Maybe. The flavor ends with plentiful cherry juice notes, more lemon and lacto notes and large dose of tartness lingering. Mouthfeel was spot-on, as always, from this brewery. Tiny bubbles, providing a wash of flavors over the palate and just tingly and perfect on the tongue.
I don’t really like that much fruit in my lambics, so I’m not entirely surprised that I wasn’t floored by this, but none the less, it’s damned good and fantastically drinkable. Not to mention, I’m sure I will enjoy an aged sample from the bottle significantly more. That is, if I ever let myself open one.

Bottles shared at the brewery: 2013 vintage magnum and 2018 vintage 0.75. 2018: opaque, murky ruby pour with a white head. Nose is amazing, packed with cherries, oak, leather, funk and lighter earthy notes the most beautiful balance I can imagine. Intense, layered. Taste follows with the same notes, perhaps not as vivid but equally tasty and complex. Light to medium, somewhat dry body, smooth and easy to drink. Mindblowing, stunning beer. The point apply to this one. 2013 vintage: the fruity notes are somewhat less intense and are subdued to the funky, leathery character and the spicy oak is more prominent too. Even though this one feels smoother, somehow not as complex and layered as the 2018 version was. Still a banger, I’d rate this somewhere around 4.2 or so.

750ml bottle.
First off, this beer looks amazing! Bright, full deep red, with a small pink head that doesnt last teribly long. Aroma is a wonderful lambic funk, with great cherries in there with that good old wet hay/barnyard lambic smell. Flavour is all cherry, very refreshing. Very nice and tart, and sour, but not over powering like some lambics, a great balance between the both, just a wonderful beer!

From bottle at Bierkoning, Amsterdam. 2014 bottle enjoyed 06-2019. Sweetish cherries with tart cherries, cherry cake, light funk, some vanilla and cherry yoghurt. Tart and sweetish, not that sour. Medium body. Good, but I expected a little more from this. I want to try a younger vintage.

Klassika, alati mõnus, nats hapukam-happelisem kui tavaliselt, aga hea.
