IPA - Black / Cascadian Dark Winter
Score
6.45
ABV: 6.2% IBU: 55 Ticks: 6
This Black IPA (or American Black Ale) is dark in color kinda like interstellar travel through deep space. It displays a combination of citrus and pine notes from Amarillo and Simcoe hops accompanied by a hint roasted malt. A fine display of balance is achieved for an IPA that appears so dark to the eye. 6.2% ABV and 55 IBUs readings make Dark Matter an out of this world Winter Seasonal experience!

Bottle. Dark brown in color. Large bubbly head. Aroma is loaded with grapefruit. Taste is also very grapefruit tasting with some hints of dark roasted grains.

Picked up at that tiny place everyone recommends in Nashville. Best by 4/3/25 stamp on the shoulder of a glass bottle.

Dark brown amber, not quite clear. Pretty, lingering, off-white head.
Wet, grassy, muted earth, perceivably fresh nuance.
Zesty leaning fruity hops, they linger, middle-high acid, sharp ash, burnt cookie, saline, bitter astringent finish that lingers. A touch sweet.
Very thin, hyper carbed.
Okay enough.

On tap at Blackstone, pours a clear dark red (strange colour for a black IPA) with a small beige head. Aroma reveals dry toasted malt and light resinous hops. Flavour is subdued on the toasted malt, with bitter dry hopping. This really lack body for the style, but is still pleasant. Needs amping up.

Draft at Craft Brewed. Pours a deep brown with a finger of beige foam. Piney, dank forward hops, with some big tangerine aromas. Tons of citrus zest, light caramel notes. Like a chocolate orange. This is a really well-executed beer that comes in as more of an hop-forward black IPA rather than a dark malt, acrid roasted bomb. Nice take on the style. --- Beer merged from original tick of Dark Matter on 22 Dec 2017 at 22:06 - Score: 7. Original review text: Piney, dank forward hops, with some big tangerine aromas. Dull, muted on both sides of the equation. Roasted and mocha-tinged but not remarkably so, and the hopping leads more resinous bitterness than any strong floral or citric notes. Needs more personality.
