Oak-Aged Lager
For our first collaboration featuring three breweries, we selected our partners following the same approach we’ve used for previous collaboration projects. Our goal is to work with brewers for whom we have mutual respect while learning new techniques and celebrating the strengths of each brewery. Arizona Wilderness has become known as champions for local ingredients in innovative beers while the Creature Comforts crew is “dedicated to better being through being curious.” It’s no coincidence that we absolutely LOVE enjoying beers with both brewery teams. For the full backstory on our relationships with both breweries, please head to a previous Brewer’s Blog post.
Built on a base of two-row pale malt, Sonoran White Wheat, honey malt and corn grits, Collaboration No. 7 – Oak-Aged Lager showcases Riesling grape juice, peaches and lemon zest in a crisp lager hopped with Nelson Sauvin, Lemondrop and Hallertau Blancs. Following fermentation with the Ayinger lager strain, Collaboration No. 7 was briefly aged on Cuvee No. 5 Tank Staves, French oak staves that impart fruit, spice, toast and tannins similar to aging in a fresh/virgin French oak barrel.
At 6% ABV and 16 IBUs, Collaboration No. 7 Oak-Aged Lager pours a brilliant golden color with tight, off-white lacing. Bright aromas of peach and Riesling grapes mingle with the tropical fruit notes provided by subtle hopping. Lemon zest accentuates the naturally citrusy character of the beer as the malt bill forms a slightly sweet, honey-like base from which the chosen regional ingredients shine. French oak character lends a drying effect resulting in a bright, fruity lager that finishes incredibly crisp. Bottle conditioned with champagne yeast, Collaboration No. 7 – Oak-Aged Lager has fluffy, effervescent carbonation that scrubs the palate and begs for another sip.

Bottle from the Davis Co-Op. Pours translucent gold with a white head. Aroma of white berry and mixed pale fruits. Med body. Flavor is slightly bready with really mixed fruits. A hint of wood. Citrus. White berry/grape. Flavors are strong, but not intense. A really pleasant drink. Well balanced.

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, bottled on 7/17/2017. Pours slightly hazy medium golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts the whole glass. Dense soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of lemon, peach, pear, white grape, citrus zest, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, and oak; with lighter notes of honey, vanilla, floral, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of pale malt, fruits, oak, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon, peach, pear, white grape, citrus zest, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, and oak; with lighter notes of honey, vanilla, floral, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/grassy/peppery bitterness and light oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, peach, pear, white grape, citrus zest, wheat, cracker, white bread dough, oak, light honey/vanilla, floral, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of pale malt, fruits, oak, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Moderately crisp/clean finishing. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness and carbonation. Perfectly clean on lager flavors, with zero yeast notes present. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and lightly acidic/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6%. Overall this is a delicious fruited pale lager! All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of pale malt, fruits, oak, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink with the modestly bitter/drying finish. Really great balance of all the flavors; the oak kind of got buried under all the fruits, but it was definitely noticeable. Very enjoyable, unique, and well made offering.

Bottle from Craft Brewed. Pours a deep gold to light copper with a full finger of foam that lingers. Lots of muscat on the nose, faint white peach aromas as it warms. Well-balanced. Light creamy notes from the oak, muscat and more peach. Very fruit forward, but still quite beer like. The oak imparts a nice, slightly creamy texture. Nice take on a lager.

12 oz. can. Hazy appearance with some yeast sediment in the bottom. Aroma is mild oak, white wine, yeast. Flavor works out pretty well. White grapes are the back bone with fruity hint in the center leading to a light dry oak texture. A tad grainy. A lot going on in this brew but it works out pretty well.

Bright, lightly hazy golden with a foamy white head. Light and delicate profile overall. Citrus, berry, some grain, light spice. I’m not really sure what the aim was with this brew. It’s not bad. But it’s not interesting enough nor is it light enough. It’s in a weird middle area that is slightly frustrating.

12oz bottle. Premium Lager huh? I'm gonna say that the peach, lemon zest, and Riesling grape juice make this a fruit beer. The champagne yeast really throws it into a realm all of its own honestly, maybe more in line with a Belgian Ale. A lot of depth. The fruit flavors are all mild and add some pleasant complexity. The same for the champagne yeast. I can see the same recipe being done quite poorly by other breweries, but Boulevard really manage to pull this one off. I drank this one quite cold, which worked in its favor. Solid offering, unique.

12 oz bottle purchased at Ranchmart Wine and Spirits in Leawood, Kansas. L071717 printed on the bottle. The pour is a hazed golden with a three inch foamy egg white head with a bunch of fine carbonation bubbles rising to the surface. The aroma is fresh peach fruit, lemon citrus zest, and wood and grapes. Interesting nose, a bunch going on. The taste is bright right away with the wine grape flavor right off, some tannin of the oak, and the softer peach fruit and lemon zest towards the back. Nice integration, creative beer. The palate is medium bodied, with an oily and coating mouth feel, along with softer carbonation and the fruit, grape and peach finish lingers.
