In spring 2011, Stone bought the farm, literally, taking over 19 acres of fertile Southern California soil where we now grow pristine fruits, vegetables, herbs and more for our Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens restaurants. A taste of our homespun farm-to-tableism is provided in this farmhouse ale. Lemon zest, grains of paradise, lemon thyme and lavender harvested in Southern California fields, including our own at Stone Farms, provide citrus and floral character along with a subtle, tantalizing spice. Thanks to the infusion of fresh West Coast ingredients, this isn’t your everyday saison. It’s our saison—100% Stone.
We made some minor changes to the beer this year, using German pilsner malt to increase the malt flavors. Additionally, we adjusted the proportions of lavender, lemon thyme, grains of paradise, lemon peel and habanero peppers to provide a great blend showcasing each ingredient within the overall balance of the beer.

Well, I had really high hopes for this being a sub 1.0 beer, but sadly it greatly disappointed and was only just bad-to-awful. The thyme and lavender in the nose were only just dominant without being obnoxiously so and while there was absolutely no saison character, there was also no real beer character either, leaving me wanting more flaw or mess. As well, I found the metallic notes to be only light at best, with no raw alcohol (I know, it’s only 6%abv, but I really thought they had it in them).
In the mouth, I was disappointed to find fizzy but not horribly-so carbonation lightening an already grainy, nearly beer-free flavor full of astringent, but mostly just stale/faded herbs and spices. Bready, lemony, spongey and vaguely unclean, but ultimately pretty watery, bland and harmless. Oh well, with every new Stone beer I try, the hope remains that I’ll get a new sub 1 rating. Even if this wasn’t their day, I know they’ve got it in ’em!

Tap @ Beer Temple (sample size). Clear pale golden blonde color. Dense/stiff white head, good lacing. Aroma’s: fruit, caramel, rather Belgian. Retronasal it’s caramel, aniseed, ginger, fruity. Flavor is light sweet, herbal spicy, light fruit. The beer is warming which seems to be from ginger rather than alcohol. Medium bodied. Rather dry and bitter finish.

Draught @ Stone Brewing Tap Room, San Diego, CA
Pours yellowish golden with a small head. Aroma of zesty lemon, grapefruit and yeasty notes. Taste is zesty lemony and grapefruity with some doughy yeastiness and earthy notes. Finish is stuffy and slightly yeasty. Decent.

Draught @ Stone Brewing Tap Room, San Diego. Aroma has funky yeasty tones and some oaty malt. Flavour has funky yeast, some apricot and grassy hops. Also some spiciness. Clean and typical saison - but a bit boring too.
