In spring 2011, Stone bought the farm, literally, taking over 19 acres of fertile Southern California soil where we now grow pristine fruits, vegetables, herbs and more for our Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens restaurants. A taste of our homespun farm-to-tableism is provided in this farmhouse ale. Lemon zest, grains of paradise, lemon thyme and lavender harvested in Southern California fields, including our own at Stone Farms, provide citrus and floral character along with a subtle, tantalizing spice. Thanks to the infusion of fresh West Coast ingredients, this isn’t your everyday saison. It’s our saison—100% Stone.
We made some minor changes to the beer this year, using German pilsner malt to increase the malt flavors. Additionally, we adjusted the proportions of lavender, lemon thyme, grains of paradise, lemon peel and habanero peppers to provide a great blend showcasing each ingredient within the overall balance of the beer.

Well there’s good and bad here. It’s nicely built, with a good balance of the spices, citrus notes, doughy malts. Just a weak hint of phenol in the nose becomes a fairly noticeable clove-like medicinal phenolic flavor, and that turned me off. I can just really do without the phenols, and this level was more in line with various tripels and/or witbiers I’ve had than any saison, so that was a bit of a disappointment.

Bottle. Quite a surprise for me to like this style as much as I did. Taste is lemon, thyme, oregano, a bit of floral undertones. Easily drinkable and worth seeking out.

Bottle from Cork & Cask. Hazy golden body with a thin white head. No visible carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of white pepper, bread and melon. Flavour of dough, lime and herbs. Thin to medium body with an oily texture. Light fizz. More bready than zesty.

Bottle. Golden body with a fizzy, white head. Aroma of Lemon, herbs, toasted grain, pepper. Hint of clove. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly sweet, moderately bitter and lightly acidic. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Lots of infused spice and no nuance. Peppery biting finish. Not a saison.

Bottle. Pours a clear gold with a thin head and medicinal aromas of herbal stuff and honey. Almost smells like some new flavor of Ricola. Herbs come through strong in the flavor as well... a little too strong for my likes. A kind of sage/thyme edginess detracts from some of the gentle subtleties of a good saison (at least in my mind). Meh.

Pours amber with a quickly fading head.Aroma of bananas, spicy phenols, soft farmhouse notes, herbal hops, hints of cardamon. Somewhat hefe- and wit-like.Spicy, lightly hoppy and yeast flavours, reasonably dry though. Some earthy Saison notes.

Bottle from Stone Bar in Asagaya. Pours a clear gold with a nice soapy head that lingers. Wonderful saison yeast nose with some lemon, white pepper, coriander and cardamom aromas present. Nice carbonation with a medium body. Nice light bitterness with lots of spiciness on the palate. Lemon stands out as it warms with a bit of berry, but best enjoyed relatively quickly. Super refreshing beer!

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; clear amber pour with a thin white head, lemon and yeast aroma, taste has light lemon, some spice, bread dough, a hint of rich tea biscuit, herb and black pepper.
