In spring 2011, Stone bought the farm, literally, taking over 19 acres of fertile Southern California soil where we now grow pristine fruits, vegetables, herbs and more for our Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens restaurants. A taste of our homespun farm-to-tableism is provided in this farmhouse ale. Lemon zest, grains of paradise, lemon thyme and lavender harvested in Southern California fields, including our own at Stone Farms, provide citrus and floral character along with a subtle, tantalizing spice. Thanks to the infusion of fresh West Coast ingredients, this isn’t your everyday saison. It’s our saison—100% Stone.
We made some minor changes to the beer this year, using German pilsner malt to increase the malt flavors. Additionally, we adjusted the proportions of lavender, lemon thyme, grains of paradise, lemon peel and habanero peppers to provide a great blend showcasing each ingredient within the overall balance of the beer.

Crisp hazy golden coloured body with a pale yellow glow and a thick, very dense off-white head, about six centimetres tall. Aroma of grass, herbs, hay, dry malt and a bit of yeast - about right for the style. Medium-bodied; Strong grassy and floral notes throughout with a dry malt quality and a lot of coriander seed noticeable. Aftertaste shows a nice profile, but the complexity simply isn’t there and it’s just too dry. Overall, a good attempt, but another decent beer at best from the big brewery out West. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Chantilly, Virginia on 02-August-2015 for US$2,49 sampled at home in Washington on 22-October-2015.

12 oz bottle. Pours a gold with a moderate head of big bubbles. Aromas of Belgian yeast, bananas, white pepper and maybe some coriander. Flavor are same but lighter. Crisp and refreshing.

Bottle. Nose is herbal lemon, slight mango and papaya, herbal hops, slight spice, honey. Taste is a herbal lemon note which is quite bitter from the lemon thyme, herbal, floral, the lavender is quite pronounced which is not to my taste, light pepper and spice in the finish. Further sips bring notes of licorice and mineral, and an almost spicy note. It’s a decent saison but too fussily seasoned for my palate.

Draft at Beer Temple. Pours clear orange with a big white head. Aroma of peppery saison yeast, weeds, grass and citrus. Flavour is above light sweet and moderate bitter. Light medium bodied with light carbonation. A really nice saison.

Golden beer with a foamy head and a sour fruit aroma. It does taste strong but not overly so. Sour and fruity taste with a tangy citrus hit to it. Crisp and could have gone being a touch colder. Really nice though.

Bottle. Bright straw colored pour, sparkling clarity, and a finger of white head. Aroma is heavy yeast, fruity, and light cloves. Pretty heavy spice at first sip… I’m finding it to be a little bitter and slightly sour. Juniper comes to mind, maybe spruce. A bit of lemon. Lively.

Keg at Brewdog Shepherds Bush, London. A golden/yellow coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Sweet, lemon, spice aroma. Tastes similar, lemon, spice, yeasty, slightly sweet. Enjoyable saison.

Draft at Standard Market. Very slight haze in a pilsner gold body, fluffy head. Light cherry nose and mild malts. A bit of chorus at the start, but then there’s the fresh thyme coming up on the palate. Except for that herbal edge, it’s actually kind of tame for a farmhouse ale. But that can be exactly want I want when I’m looking for something malty and the beer list is overrun by IPAs and sours because they’re savoring the Oktoberfest beers for the weekend.

Into a taster showing whiskey brown. The nose shows a lot of sweet ginger with some lime. The palate is well carbonated, medium bodied, slight mint in the background. Very similar to a fresh Orval. Slightly sweet malts with a medicinal-like bitterness
