Here at BrewDog, we love the hidden tracks; the unexpected discoveries. The B-Sides.

Take our 10HL pilot kit. It is the place our brewers let those imaginations fly and lay down unpredictable, creative tracks. Our brew team use it to dial in our small-scale experimental brews, each then finding its way to our bars as a draught-only special release.

However, we felt the naming convention used previously – Pilot Brew XXX – didn't fully reflected the ingenuity displayed by our brewers. To depict this a little better we now release each pilot brew as a bona fide B-Side; alongside our production-batch launches that take place at our bars, you’ll be able to discover a flip side in the form of one of our B-Side releases.

Keg at Brewdog Shep’s bush. Nice opaque black / brown coloured pour with a tidy steadfast mid tan head. Aroma is weird, dry citrus, nelson, slightly smoky / tarmac. Hints of pine needle on the nose. No roast detected on the nose, flavour is composed of light grains with only the faintest hint of roast in the finish. Hops are dried citrus, cif, nelson sauvin like hop, spicy pine needle. Palate is very light, frothy, slightly thin, drying finish. Slight carbonic acid bite in the finish. Blindfolded, this would be very difficult to pick out as a black IPA.

Black beer with a thick off-white head. Aroma is dry, bitter fruit and hop. Flavour is a touch lighter than expected. There’s a resinous twang, citrusy hop and dark chocolate-y malt. The fruity hops are what linger though. it’s quite a crisp beer too, would work really well a touch more chilled than I had it on a warm day.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - opaque black with a fawn head which falls away quite quickly. Nose - dark fruit and chocolate. Taste - dark chocolate, biscuits and dried fruits. Lime finish. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - more citrus as it goes on. It kinda does the style justice.

Keg at Brewdog, Shoreditch, London, Saturday 12th December 2015 Pours dark brown, very hoppy fresh nose. The hops could of been quite aggressive as they seem very in yer face but somehow it’s held back. Lots of hoppy burps, very easy drinking a little hop burn. Good, in fact for the abv this is really good. A8 A4 T7 P4 Ov15 3.8
