Pours near black with a small tan head. It smells of dark roast malt and coffee. The flavor is similar with a fairly dry finish. It's solid and very good though not quite as intense as I'd hoped.

The Gate, Brooklyn tap: poura dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is chocolate and molasses. Taste is somewhat sweet. Good bit of chocolate... not dark... cheap. Roasty, but just a bit. Some robustness... I suppose if that is how we are to define it. Good in general.

9.1% abv version on draft at Craft Brewed. Pours a deep brown with a finger of beige head that lingers. Dark chocolate and toasted caramel with some dark malt roasty character as it warms. Bitter and bold on the palate but some plum and prune notes come out as it warms. More dark chocolate and Italian roast character on the palate. Lingering cacao and toasted caramel with a dry, bitter finish. ABV is hidden fairly well.

Sampled from the tap at the Eccentric Cafe. Pours near black with a light chocolate brown head that fissipates to the edges. Aroma sweet dark grains with light rosdted malts and some chocolate supporting. Flavor has sweet dark grains and light roast supported by sweet chocolate and a hint of toffee.

Draft. Chocolate barley malt aroma. Dark chestnut with small head. Sweet chocolate malt with a hint of cherry. Light alcohol finish. Excellent - full-bodied and easy to drink.

On tap at the Eccentric Cafe. Deep milk chocolate brown body, tight medium buff head. Aroma of chocolate, hot alcohol, and spices. Chocolate and roasted malts greet the palate, which has a strange spiciness and an unpleasant lingering acrid bitterness. Chalky, with a touch of licorice. After several sips, some charred brown sugar elements became apparent, but didn’t mesh well with the chocolate and surprisingly prickly alcohol. This is simply a case of the parts not working together, and the beer misses the mark as a Baltic Porter. A huge disappointment.
