Our yearly collab with our friends at Barista Parlor is back. This years version starts with our Hill sour ale and is loaded with mango purée, blueberry purée, and Barista Parlor’s own Nano Challa Ethiopia coffee ☕️ . The play between this fruity coffee and the tart fruited sour base is truly something special.

Not a flavor pairing I particularly enjoy; the tart berries add a day-old coffee acidity to the java notes, all while overshadowing the subtleties you look for in a good coffee ale. Some roast, mocha, and bitterness underline the bright, citric blueberry and mango, but never comes together as a cohesive experience. Clashes on the palate, leading to a sour, lemon-n-berry fade with hints of roast. Probably works for some people, but not me. Pretty pink-purple pour, though, and the sparkly feel works. Otherwise, not my cup of tea...er, joe.

Draft at SG Nations. Pours a mostly clear ruby to purple color with a small pink head that dissipates. Lovely bright berry and coffee forward nose with cacao and blueberry alongside blackberry aromas. Quite dry on the palate with a nice blueberry skin and coffee character. More cacao nib as it warms with some lingering berry notes. Finish is dry with blueberry skin and raspberry notes with a lingering light acidity and bright coffee note. Great usage of coffee in a sour. --- Beer merged from original tick of Barista Berry Hill (2018) on 16 Jul 2018 at 21:03 - Score: 8.
