We were looking forward to this beer...and it turned out we were right to. With 11% ABV it’s a strong beer for beerlovers that enjoy their peated flavors. The original bitter coffee and chocolate flavors of Hel & Verdoemenis (translates as Hell & Damnation) are enriched with the peat, woody, roasty tastes of the exceptional Port Charlotte barrels. The beer aged in these barrels for over 6 months.

ABC Dutch Summer Tasting. Sampled from bottle kind courtesy of Mrk. Dark brown with almost no head. Big peat and licorice, vanilla, grapejuice fruitiness, quite alcoholic, toffee, wood. Sweet, medium chocolate and peat bitter, and peat saltiness. Full body, smooth fat feel, low carbonation, chocolatey finish.

Bottle at Dutch summer tasting thanks to Mrk. Black with very small light brown head. Licorice, grape juice, peat, raw cocoa, toffee, roasted malts, sugared coffee. Over medium sweet with light bitterness and light fruity tartness. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Quite unusual but not bad.

0.33 l bottle from ’De Bierkoning’, bottled in January 2016. Pitch black with a thin, soapy, light brown layer. Sweetish, slightly roasty aroma of dark chocolate, mocca, some iodine and hints of blueberries. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty taste of dark chocolate, mocca, some tar, a bit of licorice and some whiskey, followed by a long, slightly roasty-bitter, medium peaty and slightly warming-alcoholic finish. Medium to full body, slightly oily mouthfeel, flat. Well-executed, barrel notes are not too heavy, mouthfeel lacks a bit. Nevertheless quite good.

Sampled at Lentebierfestiv 2016 in The Hague. Pitch black pour with a very tall espresso head with excellent retention. Smells like peat, roasted malts, dark cherries. Peat with sherry up front, followed by dark chocolate, coffee, cocoa, cherries and a bit of milk chocolate, or cappuccino. Spicy/hot aftertaste, with notes of cognac and sherry. Damn good.

Tap at TCBW. Pours black with brown head. Aroma is sherry barrel, roast, malt. Flavor is sweet, vinous, roast, malt, peat. Finish is nutty bitter. Overall: very good. I had two samples, first one smelled and tasted like sherry-red wine barrel, although port charlotte is heavily peated whisky. I later took a new sample, because I thought that maybe they accidentely put wrong keg on. The smell of the 2nd sample was the same, but this time the flavor had actually some peat in it. Still, whatever is going on with this beer, I enjoyed it.
