Old Foghorn is brewed based on historic English barleywine methods. It is highly hopped, fermented with a true top-fermenting ale yeast, carbonated by a natural process called "bunging" to produce champagne-like bubbles, and dry-hopped with additional Cascade hops while it ages in our cellars. Made only from “first wort,” the rich first runnings of an all-malt mash, three mashes are required to produce just one barleywine brew. Introduced in 1975, Old Foghorn Ale was the first modern American barleywine sparking renewed interest domestically and in Britain.

Dark red beer, thin filmy head. Rich, wine-y fruit aroma. Taste is.... wonderful. Rich fruit, malt, caramel, bitter grassy hop. A warm, boozy finish to a hearty, tasty, rich, smooth fruity barley wine. This doesn't have the hit-in-the-mouth big flavour in the way of some of these but it's a delicious, velvety thing.

Bottle at home from the Beerhawk bar. Well chilled with a good pour and a very appealing deep, dark chestnut colour in the glass. The taste was that of a clinically well made barley wine. Huge sweet malts, a smooth mouthfeel and no sign whatsoever of the alcohol. There were no rough edges and I suppose that is my complaint; if you could call it that. It is so well made that it has very little character and could almost be described as soulless. I have had this thought drinking other beers from the brewery, but maybe I am being too harsh as this is still a benchmark beer.

Klar bernsteinfarben mit kleiner, weißer Schaumkrone. Angenehm malziger, fruchtiger Geruch.

A nice dark amber/dark red, still slightly transparent. Thin layer of white head that still leaves nice lacing. Quite strong and interesting aroma shows caramel malts, sugar, estery fruitiness and slight alcohol warmth with a resinous/grassy background. Taste follows the aroma closely with sweet malts (caramel, slight honey), some residual sugary sweetness, estery fruityness. Overall surely sweet but nicely balanced by alcohol warmth and by resinous/herbal bitterness in the finish. Medium to dense in body with average carbonation, overall quite soft in the mouth. Complex enough, nicely balanced and easily drinkable with a not too high abv for the style. Good stuff.

330 ml bottle best before 09/2017. Pours medium brown reddish, small head, not long lasting. Pear, wine grapes, liquor, brown sugar, some whiskey malts, dark cherries. Very balanced taste, malty sweetness with a dry bitter finish. Full bodied, soft to low carbonated, creamy texture. Alcoholic warmth. Very nice.
