When I first saw a black ipa that was Sakura themed from AJB I knew I had to get it for this year’s Hanami season! AJB Sumizome Sakura no Sei Black IPA 7% Deep cola black with a fizzy tan/beige head and a lightly roasted malt aroma with some piney c-hop type aromas. Medium to full bodied and smooth which I really like. The taste is roasty toasty chocolate malt and slightly bitter piney herbal hops. It’s really well balanced and drinkable making for a solid example of the style. The hops are probably lighter than most examples of cascadian dark ales but I feel in these beers they tend to have hop overkill.

Tap at Mikkeller Ari, Bangkok. Poured a clear dark brown colour with a bubbly round off white head. The aroma is roasty malt, liqouirce, treacle, floral hop. The flavour is moderate bitter, with a light grassy, liqouirce, floral, aromatic, hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

I drank this a bit old (late Aug and made in late April), but still I thought it was a very approachable Black IPA. The nose shows toffee, citrus and pine with light roasted malt character. Modest roasty mouth with modest bitterness. Nothing sticks out too much, but enjoyable beer.
