Rogue’s annual holiday offering, Santa’s Private Reserve, is a variation of the classic Saint Rogue Red, but with double the hops--including Chinook, and Centennial, and a mystery hop called Rudolph by head brewer John "more hops" Maier! This holiday elixir is brewed with two-row Harrington, Klages and Munich malts, along with Hugh Baird 30-37, Carastan 13-17, and Crystal 70-80 malts, plus free range coastal water and proprietary top-fermenting Pacman yeast.

Nose is bread, malt, floral hops. Taste is very malty, bread, leading to grapefruit, bitter marmalade and floral notes.. Mouthfeel is slick. It’s OK, but didn’t really get a sense of why it’s a Christmas beer.,

355ml bottle @ Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Pours clear copper, off-white head. aroma is mild caramel and pine. Taste is very light caramel, limey chinook, light pine, some spice with a moderate bitterness. Not as hoppy or full flavoured as expected but it’s pleasant enough, just a bit lacklustre.

650 ml. bottle sampled @ “Brazilian Tasting”. Thank you tderoeck! Contains Rebel & Freedom hops. Lol! Plus half of the ingredients have trademarks. Dark amber, little head. Nose is orange, older pine resin & orange peel hops, old grapefruit peel, sweet malty, watery,… Taste is dull, sweetish & watery with old hops, watery, herbal, old orange peel, grapefruit peel,… Watery, dull & lightly sweet beer. Possibly due to age but if you call something reserve & release it as a Christmass beer it should keep, this one was obv. a hoppy beer and didn’t give (under the assumption that it was much better in the past), label should have stated that this needs to be drunk fresh.

22/V/15 - 1Pt. 6Fl. Oz. bottle from Geers (Oostakker) @ Brazilian Tasting (home) - BB: IX/2015 (2015-677)

Clear deep amber beer, irregular beige head, little stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: malty, milk chocolate, caramel, fudge, bit fruity, very nice, smells like a barley wine to me. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty bitter, bit watery, some caramel, malty, hay, grains. Aftertaste: bitter, hay, dry, pretty grassy, hoppy, bitter ending.

12oz bottle from Mitsuya’s Liquor, Tokyo. Poured into a snifter. Hazy amber color with a modest pinkish head. Pine and bread aroma with malt coming through on the nose as well. Flavor starts off sweet from the malt and finishes a tad bitter. Nice carbonation.
