Rogue’s annual holiday offering, Santa’s Private Reserve, is a variation of the classic Saint Rogue Red, but with double the hops--including Chinook, and Centennial, and a mystery hop called Rudolph by head brewer John "more hops" Maier! This holiday elixir is brewed with two-row Harrington, Klages and Munich malts, along with Hugh Baird 30-37, Carastan 13-17, and Crystal 70-80 malts, plus free range coastal water and proprietary top-fermenting Pacman yeast.

650ml bottle. Hazy amber colour with small to average, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, off-white to beige head. Resinous, fruity, hoppy aroma, grapefruit notes, underlying toffee and caramel. Taste is dry, slightly grassy hoppy, some hay, lemon, a cautious nuttily touch.

Amber to brown in colour. Toasty malts in the aroma. Flavour is very malty and has an overall sweet taste. All the bitterness comes through in the aftertaste.

Bottle. Red copper color. Aroma of bitter hops. Taste is quite bitter as well, bit grassy also. Has some sharp citrus and that slight metallic touch amber beers often have. Bitter dry finish.

Bottle. Hop Hideout, Sheffield. Hazy, burnished copper colour. Messy, frothy, sticky, dense in parts, off white head. Looks good. Fusty, musky, caramelised orange hop. Toffee malts. Has some herbal, earthiness to it, a bit like rosemary stalks. Taste is very bitter from the off. There’s a sweetness, albeit fleeting, and doesn’t get further than the lips. Smooth, airy palate. Finishes punchy, fairly aggressive bitter. It’s not festive, but it’s a good, very hoppy amber ale.

Lots of stale hops in this, which certainly makes it better than your average amber. Stale hops is way too much of the focus though. Pours golden amber with good head and lacing. Tap at Black Squirrel.
