Rogue’s annual holiday offering, Santa’s Private Reserve, is a variation of the classic Saint Rogue Red, but with double the hops--including Chinook, and Centennial, and a mystery hop called Rudolph by head brewer John "more hops" Maier! This holiday elixir is brewed with two-row Harrington, Klages and Munich malts, along with Hugh Baird 30-37, Carastan 13-17, and Crystal 70-80 malts, plus free range coastal water and proprietary top-fermenting Pacman yeast.

Bottle. Aroma is hoppy, resiny, light roasted, light caramel. Quite clear reddish amber colour. Taste is well balanced, caramel and roasted malts play with moderate bitterness, hops flavour is earthy-zesty. Very harmonic. Body is a bit thinner than it could be. Long dry hoppy earthy finish.

Clear amber pour lots of lacing and thin foamy head. Smells almost Pilsner-like - grassy hops. Smooth palate with sweet maltiness (similar to dead guy with bready flavors). Hoppiness isn't as apparent. Nice beer.

Bottle. Clear reddish amber with an off white head. Aroma of toffee, somewhat soapy pine, grapefruit. Sweet and plain caramel with lots of pine at first, but it settles into the mix after a while. Grapefruit, orange peel, cherries, some spices (juniper, allspice). The hops are nice, but there’s so much dull caramel that the piney bitterness has to nag its way through. Not my sort of thing.

Reviewed from notes. She pours a nice super clear red-amber color and leaves the same colored body with a two finger white foamy head. Some lacing appears in foamy rings. Though quite clear in body, no carbonation is seen rising. The aroma has a sweeter sort of connotation to it than I expected as some nice malty/sugary notes take the front stage. There is some hops but they tend to be more subdued and acutally come out a bit more as the beer warms. The taste is balanced between the malts and the hops. On the palate, she sits about a medium and has a sticky dry aftertaste and a dry finish. I would say this is fairly drinkable. Overal, for the most part, this is a good beer. This is something I can come back to next year.

Brown colour with a beige head with good duration and medium lacework. Aroma has notes of spices, light caramel and ripe fruit. Flavor is slightly sweet with notes of syrup fruit, peaches are present a well as anise and rosemary. The final is slightly sweet with some bitterness hidden by caramel notes.

From a 650ml bottle on 22/12/2013. Pours a very light amber with a big to medium head. The aroma features light malt and fruit. The flavour is very fruit driven for an amber, with citrus and stone fruits prominent (orange, apricot). The malt is subdued with light caramel and toffee. The bitterness is huge and lingering here, perhaps just a touch over the top. The body is fullish and the carbonation medium. You have to let this warm, otherwise the bitterness comes across as harsh. Give it time and it’s quite enjoyable.

Bomber from Winco. amber body with thick beige foamy head. Nice hop bitterness lingers on the palate. Aroma is normal malt/hops combo, taste emphasizes the bitterness. Decent ale, but not strong or spicy enough to be a winter warmer.
