(10/14/08) Draught sample at the brewpub in Munster. Dark amber color. Aroma of slightly smoky malt, caramel and some fruity notes. Sweetish flavor, a bit smoky, with malt, caramel, some bread, biscuit notes and hints of alcohol. Medium to full-bodied.

Courtesy of Idatetheformula. Pours dark copper, white head. Aroma is fruity (apple), sweet. Taste has some dark fruits going, very sweet, malty and nice roastiness. Nice caramel malts. Full flavor, one amazing Scottish Ale, very enjoyable and drinkable.

Courtesy of Quake1028 helping me finally fill the Scottish Ale style. Pours a muddy hazy brown with thin tan head. The aroma is nice and inviting, yum, but a little tough to describe. It’s sweet with roasted malts and creamy crusty roastines. Then I get some dark fruit notes mixing in there with boysenberry and sweet dark fruity grapes. The taste is sweet with both sweet caramelized malts and dark berry to dark grapes soaking in a syrup of brown sugar. There is a mild earthiness that leads into a nice sweet caramel after taste.

Bottled
Beer with great sounding name. Dark nut brown color, huge cloudy brownish head. Toffeish malty aroma, light notes of whi cream. Fudge, whisky and chocolate - sweetish and liquerish palate. Nice dessert beer and good example of Scottish ale.

Bottled (Thanks heemer77!). Dark murky brown/red colour with big off-white head. Lacing. Aroma is caramel, meat, yeast, spices and caramel malts. Very interesting and different, once it warms up, it also gets quite much ginger bread in it. Flavour is ginger bread, spices, fruity hops, cookies and flowery hops on the tongue. Very different from mostly anything I have had before.

Bottle: pours an auburn mahoghany color with a medium off-white head and no lacing. Nose is rich with dark maltiness and a little bready. Taste is sweet and malty smooth with a little dark fruitiness. Raison and winelike notes into the finish with just a hint of the moderate abv. Thanks Eithcubes.

2005 12 oz. bottle provide by and shared with csbosox. Pour is brown with red highlights with a medium off white / tan head. Lighter than Old Chub (which we were tasting side by side). Aroma is roasted malt sweetness though not a huge aroma. Taste is more of the malt, and very dry, almost a woody taste. A little bit of oxidation towards the very end. Overall, a very nice sipping beer. Very interesting to taste side by side with Old Chub. Not sure this helps me understand the difference between a Scotch and Scottish Ale, but fun nonetheless.

Finally I get to taste my first FFF! However, the only other scottish ale I have to compare this to is Eries Red Ryder. Had this on tap at the Vintage Estate Wine & Beer in Boardman OH. The pour is brownish and clear. Has a tan head that fades to a froth after a few moments. Very little aroma, can’t smell barely anything but perhaps some raosty ness. The initial flavor impact is medium high bitterness. Has a little carbonation. To an extent it is a bit malty roasted bitterness. There is a linger that hangs on the back of your throat after the initial swig. I can’t get over the medicinal qualities of this brew. Strong, apparently high alky content from the flavors, alky is not well hidden. Not impressed. Overall, except for the bitter alky attributes, this beer is not tooooo bad. Definately on par with Erie’s Red Ryder. This is probably a scotch ale that is listed under the wrong category.

bottle - Pours dark brown with a small head. The aroma is strong caramel malts and the taste follows suit, but also pulls off a pretty good hops balance. The body is medium to full and it feels lightly carbonated. The malt flavors are great. Finally there’s a pleasantly dry finish with a touch of alcohol. Good beer.
