Bottle at the hotel in Edinburgh. Pours deep brown-black with a large, frothy beige head. Lovely aroma with rich smoked malt character, some cocoa, earth. Light sweet flavor with further dark, smoked malts, nips of peat, burnt herbs, crispy bacon. Light to medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Well balanced finish with more smoke, semi-sweet chocolate, dark berries and scorched earth. Very good.

Bottle from the Deeside Drink’s Emporium. It pours deep brown with a medium light tan head. The nose is rich smoke, honey roast ham, Asian-style pork, light roast, leather and tobacco. The taste is smokey, rich earthiness, black tea, roasted malt, bacon frazzles, light caramel, liquorice, faint astringency and a touch of acidity with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Interested and pretty well-executed.

33cl bottle from Provenance Wines. Appearance - between very dark brown and black. There’s a chink of light getting in which produces a red chink on the edges Looks good. And a lovely generous head. Nose - smoke and the faintest hint of milk chocolate. Taste - more of the same. Get the smoke but not the tea. Palate - medium bodied with a dry texture which lasts through to the finish. Overall - another one that tails off at the end.

Bottle from Vino Wines. Dark brown body with ruby highlights. Medium off-white head that leaves sticky lacing marks. Very powerful aroma of smoky bacon, ash, meat and chocolate. Flavour of plum, ham, stewed tea and smoke. Thin to medium body with an oily texture. Soft carbonation. An unusual beer, and credit to Barney’s for trying something a bit different, but for me it doesn’t quite hit the spot. It tastes overly smoked and lacks the rich, chocolatey quality I like in a Porter.
