Always on the hunt for new flavours, Tempest Brewing Company has teamed up with Thistly Cross, a Scottish cider maker to produce Saison Cider, a blend of beer and apple cider. Pouring ruby red, thanks to the addition of blackcurrants, this very grownup version of Snakebite and Black offers fruit scents aplenty, the nose awash with sweet, fruity, woody notes. The taste is just as fruity as the bouquet, with a sharp, refreshing tartness that lingers.

On tap at the Cobbles in Kelso. Appearance - dark toffee to chestnut with a generous frothy head. Nose - toffee and fruit. Taste - blackcurrant completely comes through but with a lovely malt background. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a refreshing finish. Overall - yeah good merging of styles.

Cask, half at The Blue Blazer. Dark reddish body appearance. Fair white head. Sweet berries to the nose, like blackcurrant juice. The taste follows the nose with sweet berries to the fore, this time a bit jam-like. Berries and fruits to the ending with a little note of tartness to it. Reminds me of a cider. Drinkable without further excitements (Edinburgh 09.08.2013).

Cock Tavern. Keg. Very hazy red- pink beer. Residual pink head! Light palate, semi dry. Fine carbonation. Big sweet apple! Tempered by tangy blackcurrant and a little plum. Finishes dry and tangy, Well this is different! Pretty drinkable!

Cask at Craft Beer Rising. It pours deep red with a medium off-white head. The nose is jam, blackcurrant, tanginess, apple, red grape and some farmyard. The taste is fruity, tangy berry, blackcurrant jam, apple, crisp sourness and red grape with a dry, lightly tart finish. Smooth, well balanced and just massively drinkable. Nice work!
