Bourbon Barrel-Aged Angel's Share

Admin Note: There are unique entries for Angel's Share aged in Brandy Barrels, Bourbon Barrels and Scotch Barrels.

Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Each time a barrel is filled, a measure of liquid seeps into the oak and is lost for good.

This striking Strong Ale is brewed with copious amounts of Caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied bourbon or brandy barrels. The beer spends a year in oak before it is packaged for release. The beer is 12.5% ABV and is available in 375ml bottles and on draft at inspired locations.

The Angel’s Share Story
It’s warehouse #5 built in 1886 that gets the most attention. The other four weren’t built so well and succumbed over the years. On the outside, to most #5 is a rather unremarkable white washed building. That is until they pass through the weathered doors and are easily consumed. Here in the hallowed halls it just oozes history. Inside this three story building, they find row after row of whiskey slumbering away the days until the distiller calls their name and they are called into action.

It’s a weathered building with a timeline of over one hundred and twenty years of continuous service. Looking around, there is a warm orange glow from all the wood inside. On both sides of the room for as far as your eyes can see, there are wood racks with carvings, nicks and dings. It smells sweet in here. Could that be the Whiskey breathing? Perhaps it’s the angels doing their work? Or is there just something sweet about 200 year old wood that intoxicates your sense of smell.

Imagine the history that belongs to the wood in this “shed.” It comes from seeds that were planted when the idea for the Revolutionary War was just fermenting. And it’s still here, every single day telling the story of this distillery. This warehouse has seen it all. It survived the harsh winter of 1913. There was the Tornado in 1956 and who can forget the flood of 1973? But, it’s still here. Still working, living and breathing whiskey as great grandpa designed it to do.

Sure, there are more cobwebs and spiders than there used to be. It’s an old building after all. One of the family members proclaimed it to be a grand old warehouse of monumental importance, so now it’s on the National Registry of Historic Buildings. Yet, the premise has always been the same. We need a place to age those spirits. And #5 has always been there.

Ask the family members to describe #5 and they all tell you the same thing.”The angels get more than their fair share from #5 but we don’t care. To us, there is nothing finer than the whiskey that comes from old #5. We wish they drank less. But then again, we really don’t need an excuse to drink more?”

Sampled @ SBWF on September 29. Pours a deep amber with almost no head. Smell is sweet with vanilla and a distinct alcohol character. It very much smells like bourbon. Taste is very sweet with vanilla and that distinct warm bourbon taste that comes with the smell.Re-rate! I’ve learned to like stuff like this a lot more since my initial rating. Has aged with dignity. Really damn good! --- Beer merged from original tick of Angel's Share: Bourbon Barrel-Aged on 09 Jan 2015 at 22:14 - Score: 9. Original review text: Really damn good! 2010 Vintage bottle@home: I heard a pop when uncorking the bottle, yay looks like it is carbonated, pours a dark brown/black colour with a mahogany/burgundy hue with no real head to speak of, smell is lots & lots of prunes, smells like half dried prunes or prune jam with a decent portion of sirop de Liège mixed in there as well, also plenty of bourbon with spices & some brown sugar, taste is once again lots of prunes, molasses, thick syrup, brown sugar, dark fruits, figs, caramel, toffee, maple syrup, sirop de Liège, maybe some malt, raisins, liquor, if there is wood to be found in here, it is buried underneath, somewhere there, it is flat, sweet & very syrupy followed by lots of bourbon (also syrupy bourbon) & booze, it is warming but the alcohol is very noticeable in this & very wine like, the alcohol does hit you, serious stuff, is it worth it? Probably, it is a bit hard to say but interesting it definitely is, an attack on the senses all right

2008 Vintage 375ml bottle @ Pikkulintu, Helsinki

Pours pitch black with minimal head. Aroma has notes of vanilla, oak, malts and slightly dark berries and caramel. Taste is slightly red winish and sour with notes of vanilla, oak, malts and berries. A bit sticky and smooth finish. Nice, quite wine like barrel aged beer.

37,5 cl bottle vintage 2008 @ Olutravintola Pikkulintu, no BBE info
Aroma is rather stale. It has lots of vanilla and sweet malt and raisins with alcohol. Sourish flavour has very stinging alcohol, vanilla, raisins and sweet malt. Lots wood and harsh bitterness. Reminds me of red wine. Not really my kind of beer, too intense and harsh.

Dark brown beer, little cloudy, residue floating around. No head. Aroma: port, orange peel, alcohol, dried fruits, caramel. MF: light but ok carbon, full body. Taste: chocolate explosion! Some red berries first, then chocolate, port, wood, mocha, dark chocolate towards the end. Aftertaste: red berries, chocolate, more port notes, nuts, vanilla touch.

Corked bottle, vintage 2009, 1½ years old
The color is dark brown, almost black; flat. The aroma mainly comes from the vanilla oak, with notes of chocolate and Sherry. The body is strong, the mouthfeel can be at times oily; strong chocolate flavor, quite sweet, but counterbalanced by liquorice and alcohol; also a good vanilla presence; the high alcohol content creates a nice warming feeling in the end. Very good.

This beer looks like sewer water with its deep, dirty dark brown that is remarkably cloudy. Nice aroma with great bourbon sweetness. Great coffee and bourbon all over the taste. Velvety full mouthfeel is well-rounded from the bourbon barrel.

Bottle. Pours dark brown, almost black. No head. Nice aroma, lots of vanilla notes from the barrel, also some licorice and smokiness. The taste has a lot of bourbon in it. In fact I have never tasted anything that has tasted as much of the barrel as this beer. Also some vanilla/cream. Lots of alcohol (too much). The body is a little too thin to handle all the alcohol and barrel notes.
