375ml bottle at Monk’s Cafe. Black, inky liquid with a spitty tan head that was very faint around the outside of the glass. Aroma was big wood, brown sugar, molasses, some toast, vanilla, bourbon. Flavor is heavy on the vanilla, bourbon, wood, molasses, toasted malts. The finish is slick, a little boozy. Nice.

bottle, thank you very much Allen! Deep brown colour with no head. Very complex aroma of caramel, songle malt whisky with a touch of smoke and dark berries. Very full-bodied, intensively malty, rather sweet with flavours of licorice, dates, whisky and plums, and just a shy hint of smoke.Very interesting, thanks for sharing this one and Angel’s Share with me, Allen!

Bottle @ HJ Hansen, Odense. Pours black with small bubbles on top. Nose is sweet of bourbon and roast. Lots of vanilla and oak. Low carbonation. A bit warm and slick. Taste is bourbon, coffee, vanilla and caramel. A barrel version that really works. Enjoying every sip of this complex masterpiece. Thank you God!

Bottled, shared by Menno. Pitch black color, short head. Aroma is heavy of roasted malt, coffee, chocolat, alcohol, liquor, some cask notes, bit vinous. Strong taste, big malted, bourbon, oak, hint of vanilla, slight alcoholic. Lovely brew, but it’s 2 much to drink for a starter :-)

2011 re-rate. Black with a small tan head. Lots of licorice in the aroma, with chocolate, toffee, soy sauce and a touch of coconut and bourbon. Sweetish licorice and bourbon dominated flavour

Review entered to celebrate my 2100th US rating. Bottled at the brewery. A pitch black beer with a brown head. The aroma is sweet malty iwth notes of roasted malt, bourbon, and bread. The falvor is sweet malty with notes of roasted malt, bourbon, and a bit of acicity from the wood, leading to a dry roasetd, bitter, and alcoholic finish. The alcohol tickles the tongue in the aftermath.

pitch black, very large brown thick head. aroma of licorice, barley wine’ish, very faint sort of sourish, kinda nice, i’d like some roasted coffe added. flavor is super well balanced, licorice, vanilala, wooden aged, dry, very near perfect flavor. overall a must-try beer - this is real good stuff indeed. [7.4.9.4.18] re-rate 2016-03-12 bottle from kihoskh. pitch black, small brown head. 4 to 3. Super nice roasted malty aroma with a deep feel to it, molasses, licorice, brown sugar, very dry, us hops, coffee, wood -but only the nicer woody notes from wood, not sweet booze. 7 to 9 flavor is roasted malts, licorice, good hoppy balance, not too sweet not too dry, very nice flavor. unchanged 9. This is really a very refined black beer, barrelled imperial stout. lots of wood, but the bourbon is not too much. palate and overall stays. so we end up at 4.3. One of the best black beers i’ve tasted.

12.7 fl oz bottled, corked and caged, from the Sinners Club. 2008 Vintage. Served out of the wine fridge at 55 degrees into my Stone IRS tulip. Pour is hazy full black, with a big loose 4 inch khaki head. Head crackles and falls with a lot of noise and some pretty lacing. This is a pretty beer. Aroma is initially quite big on the resin and oak wood of the barrels, after that fades a bit, some strong licorice, roasted malt and a decent amount of alcohol heat. This is actually more of the wood and heat than I remembered, bordering on overpowering. Taste is the big wood oakiness right away, very strong tannins, very Bourbony and very sharp with the barrel. The licorice and roast of the nose are present, though a bit lost behind the wood, booze and Bourbon. There is some nice dark chocolate to the finish, which helps bring things together a bit. Palate is medium-thick, coats the mouth a bit before the tannins of the wood and the alcohol heat dry it back out. Aftertaste is long, and warming. This beer has come together a bit since I last had it, but it still just a monster of a beer. As before, well made, still not entirely my thing. (7,5,7,3,14 - 3.6)

12.7 fl oz bottled, corked and caged, from the Sinners Club. 2008 Vintage. Pour is deep hazed black, with a firm two inch deep tan head. Nice coating lace left on the glass as the head falls. Pretty beer. Aroma of roast malt and bitter dark chocolate. The bourbon and barrel is also present, though nicely behind and melded with the roast maltiness. Some soy and licorice comes out as it warms, followed by a fair amount of alcohol. Taste is big and brash, the melding of the nose yields to flavor spikes of Bourbon, oak barrel tannins, the roasted malt, and a touch of the soy and licorice of the nose. The pine bitter hoppiness is harsh and accents all of the other flavors. Alcohol comes through clean and hot in the aftertaste, followed by smoky roastiness. The alcohol is very warming, and stung my chest. Palate is medium to thick, sludgy, mouth coating, yet still somewhat viscous. The aftertaste, as mentioned is long and hot. If you like wood, booze and Bourbon, this is your beer. Not exactly my thing, but it was well done. (8,5,6,4,13 - 3.6)
