Fortem is a new-age imperial IPA that draws upon a range of influences, all while exhibiting DNA from our own forays into the IPA style. As such, it blends newer hop varieties from the Pacific Northwest and Hallertau, Germany along with pale malt, wheat malt and flaked oats for a full body and rounded mouthfeel. Fortem has been left unfiltered for a full hop impact.

16 oz can. Color is a hazy golden, bubbly off white head, spider web lacing. Aroma of mild grass, mellow tropical fruit, pale malts. Flavor is the same mild grass and tropical hints. Pretty good malt backbone with a mellow bitterness. Medium body. The alcohol is only lightly noticed.

A very nice shelf beer that nobody has to stand in line for. As the beer scene in New England gets more crazy, I love just being able to walk into a beer store and get a Quality, easily accessible Imperial IPA right off the shelf.

Pint can aliased as Leo v. Ursus. Bright golden pour with a mountain of pillowy head. Sweet and potent aroma is full of hoppy dankness and citrus, a little spicy. Full of hoppy flavor, smooth, moderately bitter, but sweet enough to balance. Love the pint can.

Good, solid beer. Nothing earth shattering.

Draft at Shepherd and Knucklehead, Hoboken, 4/20/17. Unclear orange color, nice, frothy, off-white head and some fairly heavy lacing. Resiny hops, grains, pale malt. Grapefruit rind. Drinks fairly bitter, with an average carbonation, and a long, dry close. Well made, and seems apropo on this particular date.

On tap at Tap & Bottle, pours a clear golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out dank, piney hops, some weed and biscuity malt to back. Flavour is along the same lines, with piney hops and crisp crackery malt, with a slight seltzery quality. Not their best beer, but it's constructed well enough.

(Tall can from Bottlecraft Little Italy, SD, ~1mo @ drinking time) Pours a lightly hazed dark gold with a decent sized, rather stable white head. Aroma of berries, flowers, sweet mango, tangerine, grass, sweet clean malt body. Flavour has honey sweet clean malt despite the fuller grain bill, a bit syrupy, sweet orange, mango, flowers, bitter berry sort of astringency, hop oils, and resin, bitterness is only light to moderate, quite clean overall. Medium-full, oily, softer carbonation. The low bitterness is nice, but it’s sweeter and not as juicy as I’d really like it to be.
