The most popular of all sweet krieks in Belgium, the heritage of Constant Vanden Stock, a well-known socker personality and taken over by then-Interbrew. Pours a bright and pure ruby red, clear with little to no visible fizz, under a thinnish, sticky, light beige head with slight pinkish hue, leaving good lacing. Aroma of sugary cherry jam, grenadine, fruit lemonade, warm apple cake, lime peel, white bread, rose petals, something faintly sulphuric and the typical cooked pasteurization smell, though fortunately rather subdued. Sweet taste, artificial sweet cherry and grenadine, but less cloyingly sugary than I had feared, with a slight lemony sourish touch which is actually quite appetizing; mouthfeel rather thin and a bit undercarbonated, but that is not a big deal for this style, slick and smooth; some caramelly and bready maltiness in the background but very weakly and thinly so, weak finish with lingering lemonade-like ascorbid acid with a somewhat dryish effect, very faint hint of leafy hop bitterness, even fainter woody touch and some equally weak bready maltiness, though it is still the sugary sweetness which remains the longest. Overall: simple, industrial, one-sided, blandly sweet, boring cherry beer, but a typical and correct example of the style, less sweet than that horrible Extra version and not too offensive. A style you must avoid if you’re into lambic, obviously, as lambic presence is very, very restrained in this one. The acidity is clearly artificial and there is no sign of any Brett funkiness; this thing probably consists mainly of an anonymous bland lager flavoured and coloured with cherry extracts and sugar, but some of the ’true’ Belle-Vue kriekenlambiek - which unsurprisingly contains only a very low amount of fruit - is still there. AB InBev would immensely surprise me by blending a true ’oude’ kriek (or even a geuze, like its predecessor Interbrew did back in the nineties), but in the clutches of those capitalist bankers, I assume chances are zero to nil for something exciting like that to happen.

(On tap) Clear ruby red with big pink white head. Lovely cherry aroma perhaps a bit glacé cherry rather than fresh cherry. Well carbonated with soft velvety mouthfeel. Taste is sweet and glacé cherry with a little balancing tartness. Over a nice easy drinking Kreik. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

0,25L bottle (as Belle-Vue Kriek Classique, ABV 5,1%), BB 03.07.15. Pours red with light pink head. The head stays for a moment. Aroma is sweet, sour, cherries. Flavor is sweet and dry, cherries, acidic, watery. Overall: no bad, but very simple and little bit too watery. --- Beer aliased from original tick of Kriek Classique on 16 Feb 2018 at 16:58.
