This dark & intriguing Schwarzbier is brewed with Chocolate Malt and German Tettnang hops for a balanced, Crisp, Clean taste. Dark caramel in flavor with a finish reminiscent of a Smoking Gun.

Bottle. Nice dark beer. Wouldn’t call it black. Much milder taste then one would imagine.

Notes from 02/04/2009 I was about to trade for some of this when it started popping up on my local shelves. Note: Empty BB/BO date box on the bottom left corner of the label. Poured into my Ommegang Anniversary glass. Frothy coffee creamer-colored head that completely whitewashes the sides of the glass. A dash darker then the color of what Guinness passes for these days. The smell of malted milk balls, a touch of hazelnut syrup, & a ticklishly sharp edge of caramel & nutmeg. Smoke is at least somewhat evident in the taste, somewhat. I was looking forward to that part. Coffee backs that up in a bigger way then I'd like. Roasted sweetness is all up front, with minuscule flavors of cream, salt, & tin in between. An earthy bitterness accompanies a newspaper between your fingers(smoked?)finish. Minute amount of carbonation, & a thin feel, which is helpful, but it only evens out the dryness developing on my tongue. It tastes like a flat stout. Do with that what you will. Sam Adams Black Lager is a better choice at two bucks cheaper a six.

This one pours from 12oz bottle a deep brown with reddish hues and a medium sized head of tannish foam. After a few minutes, it settles down to a fine broken layer with lots of lacing.
The smell has a lot of chocolate and grain in the nose.
The taste is big on the chocolate up front but it's a semi-sweet chocolate. Could be desribed as a cocoa flavour. Further sips in and I'm getting some caramel with a bit of a hop bite that makes for, an overall, very balanced flavour. The finish has a touch of smoke to it. Very nicely done indeed. The flavours work so well together; tast, really smooth, and very darn drinkable. Good mouthfeel too. I really like this Schwartzbier...wish they carried it here in Casper.
Bottom line: Like I said, this is a very drinkable and tasty Schwarzbier. I'll have to pick up some more on my next trip to Ft Collins! Recommended!

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours crystal clear dark brown color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, toffee, dark bread, smoke, light char, and roast/smokey earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark, roast, smoke, and bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, toffee, dark bread, smoke, light char, and roast/smokey earthiness. Light roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, toast, toffee, dark bread, and roast/smokey earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and robustness of dark, roast, smoke, and bready malt notes; with a good roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly bready mouthfeel that is nice. Very clean flavor and finish as well. Alcohol is well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.5%. Overall this is a damn nice schwarzbier style. All around great complexity and robustness of dark, roast, smoke, and bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

GABF week 2012. On tap at the brewery. Pours with a clear, deep brown hued body with a lasting tan head. Aromas are of brown sugar, malty, bready, low roast, nutty, and leathery. Flavors are nutty, roasty, coffee, mild bitter, light umami. Complex dark malt character. Pretty solid Schwarz. Fuller carbonation, light body and dry.

Roasted unmalted barley aroma, fresh split wood. Cola brown, clear, thin yellow head. Astringent, little body. Grainy, but with a lightly sweet tobacco and walnut finish. I’ve had much better examples of the style, but this had its charms. Generous rating.
