Bottle shared by someone at Paul and Ryan’s 5000th celebration, thanks! Poured a clear amber with a near white head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma was full of grain and bread with some spice and a hint of fig. Flavor was similar with bread and sweet grains coming through backed by hints of spice and fig.

Very odd ale. Sound of crackling in the glass like it is radioactive. Smells like cooked grapes. Tastes almost like bad wine. Rated 8/13/02

Bottle at Toms Ultimate Glasgow Tasting: Poured copper color with off white head. The aroma is fruit and spice. The taste was a sour tingley fruit.

’03-12oz bottle-pours a thin fizzy white head that vanishes. Hazy/cloudy that you can’t see thru, deep orange, with sediment floating throughout. Aroma is fruity/apple, berry, herb. Musty. Taste is initially a burst of everything that the nose picked up. Then some additional notes add in from plum, cherry, honey, malt, wheat and tartness. Not a session beer, but quite interesting, nice. 4.2

Bottled, rated live. Part of my fine trade with Dorwart. For a trad ale, it pours very light, almost like a Honker’s Ale, but for a suggestion of red highlights. Kicks up a fizzy head that disappears completely. Taste is red-wine-dry and has a mellow blend of spices, like a lawnmower version of a Christmas ale. Lemony and more sour than bitter. I have no idea what yarrow and rosemary would taste like, but I know this isn’t the same old clove & coriander spice. More like a cinnamon. There’s a layer of sediment that I think I’ll stir up once I’m through the bottle to see if there’s more spice there; let’s see...
Okay, pouring the sediment makes it hazy, of course, and gives it a yeasty taste that’s to be expected. A little more spiciness, and a nice fizziness that stays with the glass. I get a feeling there’s some traces of the actual spice, like a nutmeg, now. Finishes pretty sour. Not your everyday beer, but an interesting sample of olden days brewing technoques, thought I doubt any pre-hopped beers were this light.

Secret Santa beer #2 sent to me by Jason (Dorwart). Murky apricot yellow-orange body, nary an off-white head. Perfumey, herbal aroma almost reminded me of ginger. Surprisingly sour flavor with a sharp, lemony bite. Tasty herbs carry the day with an effect similar to that of bay leaves peeking through the sour body. Perfumey yarrow is also evident in the flavor. As sour as any beer I’ve had outside a lambic; this is a "bog" beer, relying on the acidity and tannins of its denizen herbs for its earthy, funky effect. I wish more brewers would stray from hops every now and then.

Bottle Pours a hazy peach/apricot color with a small but fine head of white that settles to a thin ring that generates spotty thin lacing. Aroma is sweet and fruity. Like melons or apricots. Flavors are a dry earthy musty floral flavor. Very soft carbonation and a mild plain finish. Pleasant and interesting. Thanks to HerFtyDrf for sharing this one.

I have only had a gruit before as a homebrew. Two druids has the color of a slightly watered down ice-tea with a fleeting minimal head. Almost a gasoline color with no bubbles. The aroma is sharp with honey and tobacco. The flavor starts with a sweet/sour fruitiness that develops quickly into a strong tartness that becomes a smooth and dry at the finish. The strong drying sensation disappeared with more tasting. A really different experience.
