Launched in 1927 by Colonel Jim Porter after three years of development, the 1960 merger of Newcastle Breweries with Scottish Brewers afforded the beer national distribution and sales peaked in the United Kingdom during the early 1970s. The brand underwent a resurgence in the late 1980s and early 1990s. By the late 1990s, the beer was the most widely distributed alcoholic product in the UK. Brewing moved in 2005 from Newcastle to Dunston, Tyne and Wear and in 2010 to John Smiths Brewery in Tadcaster.

Unes Maccagno 25.07.20

550ml bottle BBE in 9 months. Pours brown with good size head that leaves a decent lacing. Aroma of sweet toffee malts; simple but pleasant. Low carbonation, medium body but light on the palate; nothing special. Taste of toffee malts, occasional light roasted notes, moderately sweet; quite nice. Carbonation holds better if drank from the bottle and gives it an extra vibe. Easy to drink. I used to drink this as an alternative to lager back in the day and it was often was the best brew of the night. Taste buds change but I reckon this is the same recipe. Now I’m 42 I realise this isn’t exactly a great ale but it certainly is iconic and a good entry point to getting people interested in ale in the UK, even if it is now owned by Heineken!

Sampled on the ferry from England to France. Not much specific notes were taken as this was between RB and brewver. It was in a clear glass bottle, and thus a bit skunked. Weak flavor profile ( even for the style, yes ) , but not all that bad. Think sparkling water with a touch of slightly darker malts. very restrained bitterness. Not something i'd easely order again, and i'm kindof a fan of traditional english ales…

Pours light brown, just clear enough to see a little trough the liquid. Nicely big and healty off-white head, good enough retention, little lacing. Highly sweet aroma of caramel plus some kind of general syrupy fruitiness. Slight nutty hints. Overall moderately intense. Taste follows the aroma closely with good enough intensity, but no depth or finesse whatsoever. Sweet from start to aftertaste, possibly a bit too much. Light to medium bodied with low to medium carbonation, resulting in a smooth, easy mouthfeel. A really bland, uninteresting offering.

Frothy off-white head, diminishing slowly. Cherry aroma. Thin and a bit watery. Slight hopbitter and milk chocolate flavor. Toffee and cherry. Slight bitter finish. Nice, tasty beer, could use some more body.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Total Wine & More, Burlington. Appearance is clear, reddish amber with lazy trace sparkle, finger-width beige foamy head with poor retention and trace lacing. Aroma is caramel and nutty with a European hop earth and tarty fruit/borderline skunkiness. Taste is caramel and nuts, background mild fruit, late earth. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with smooth, watery texture average carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, taste has all the pleasant aspects of the aroma without the unpleasant ones. Not spectacular by any means but not sure why this is treated so harshly.
