Berliner Braun uses a sour mashing process to force a sour fermentation. A strong lactic and funky fermentation ensues for twenty four hours before the beer is boiled and fermented as normal. This unaged version is tart, sour, and has a corresponding dark fruit malt character. We decided that instead of aging all of it, we will release a small amount of it before it goes into barrels.

Thanks to Rian for sharing! Nice dry malts in the nose. The brew starts watery-sourish, not too deep. Floral hints, hints of roasted dry malt, very watery-flat. Not too deep. Fresh, thirst-quenching, but boring. Tastes like a "normal" Dunkles, that had just turned sour...

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy brown amber color with a small off-white head. Has a spicy sour caramel aroma. Fruity sour tart caramel flavor. Has a fruity sour tart caramel finish.

Bottle at the Beer Temple, Amsterdam. Poured a murky dark reddish brown with little life. The flavour is medium sour with a watery earthy acid citrus palate. Light bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle shared at Beer Temple. Pours very hazy brown with no real head. Aroma of citrus, light malt. Flavour is light sweet and heavy salty. Light medium bodied with high carbonation.

Bottle 500ml. @ home in garden. [ As Jacks Abby Berliner Braun ].Unclear matt, initial sparkling, medium to dark brown color with a initial small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly to fully diminishing, off-white head, later it was just flat. Aroma is light to moderate malty, roasted, moderate to light heavy tart, citrus, lacto. Flavour is moderate to light light heavy sweet and light moderate acidic with a long duration, lacto, citrus tart, sour - soured milk, caramel - roasted. Body is medium, texture is watery, carbonation is flat. [20140719]

Half liter bottle shared at the DC Summer Saison & Sour Tasting, 7/12/14. Pours a clear copper color with a thin head that quickly fades. Aroma of caramel, toffee, mild lactic sourness. The taste is nutty notes, caramel, apples, mild tartness. Medium bodied, slight lingering tartness.
