A rich fruity wine-like complexity on the palate includes fresh and dried fruits, warm exotic spice and light summer citrus fruits. Sophisticated, satiny smooth with a deceptively light character.

330ml bottle. Pours clear brown with a large rocky beige head, great retention. Aroma of malts, dark fruits, mild spices. Taste is sweet, fruity, spicy, caramel, molasses, raisin, liquorice. Medium bodied, smooth, soft carbonation, and as described it is indeed feeling quite light considering the strength. Good one.

Bottle from Hogs Back Brewery shop. Sweet spiced aroma. Marzipan. Dark brown. Thin bubbly beige head. Initially sweet before developing some bitterness. Stewed fruit, spices, Christmas. Medium bodied. On the thin side but does have a chalky element to the mouthfeel. Average carbonation. Long warming finish. Enjoyable - would certainly go down well on a cold night on Stromness.

Dark red/light brown, maybe slight haziness. Small slightly off-white head, decent retention, scarce lacing. Aroma has caramel, dark/dried fruits (figs most noticeable), slight spiciness and a bit of alcohol warmth. Average intensity. Taste follows the aroma notes, with dominant sweetness. Alcohol too easily evident and a bit of a sticky/sweet finish. Medium bodied with medium to high carbonation, possibly too carbonated per style. Overall fair in terms of intensity but not at all well balanced or refined.

330ml bottle in a snifter glass. Clear, dark reddish brown with a foamy tan head that fizzed away pretty quickly. Aroma is boozy fruit cake, rum hints. Taste is broadly similar. Warming alcohol is surprisingly prominent for an 8.5% beer.
