In January 2016 our friends Txus and Eneko from Laugar Brewery (Basque Country) came over for a collaboration. It's turned out as a crazy but genius triple Saison-ish with salt, rye, smoked whisky malts and infused with bourbon. While thinking of a name for this new puppy we decided to combine two icons of our own cultures, Txapela & Klompen. Txapela being the traditional Basque headwear & Klompen being the traditional Dutch footwear. The beer is unpronounceable in both our languages now - probably neither in yours - but, hey... 'that's De Molen for ya'.

0.33 l bottle from ’De Bierkoning’, bottled in February 2016. Clear, deep reddish amber with a thin, soapy, tan layer. Sweetish-malty, smoky and very boozy aroma of caramel, peat, smoked ham, lots of bourbon, vanilla, cinnamon and brown sugar. Sweet, malty, slightly smoky taste of caramel, raisins, brown sugar, smoked ham, cinnamon, again lots of bourbon and vanilla, followed by a very long, hot-boozy, maybe minimally salty finish. Full body, oily mouthfeel, flat. Very interesting at least, almost a flavour overkill, but actually it’s only the alcohol heat in the end that makes it a bit hard to drink. I quite like this, wonder what aging would do.

Bottle. Red copper color. Aroma of smoke, sweet fruit and some weirdness. Taste is really weird, with lots of smoke, salt, alcohol burn, toffee, sweet vanilla, ripe fruit and a finish with salty booze. A lot going on, hard to discern all the different flavors, but I like the overall taste this strange messy brew has.

33cl bottle. Dark ruby pour with no head and visible sedimentation. Smells like peated whiskey, smoked malt, dried fruit. Bitter-sweet and smoky taste, with notes of red fruit, sherry, raspberry jam, bacon, salt, caramel and alcohol. Feint notes of bourbon, but I would have missed them, had I not known to look for them. Sticky finish with an alcohol hot and spicy aftertaste.
