In January 2016 our friends Txus and Eneko from Laugar Brewery (Basque Country) came over for a collaboration. It's turned out as a crazy but genius triple Saison-ish with salt, rye, smoked whisky malts and infused with bourbon. While thinking of a name for this new puppy we decided to combine two icons of our own cultures, Txapela & Klompen. Txapela being the traditional Basque headwear & Klompen being the traditional Dutch footwear. The beer is unpronounceable in both our languages now - probably neither in yours - but, hey... 'that's De Molen for ya'.

Bottle at Café Derat, Utrecht. The complex aroma consists of malt, sweet dried fruits, plenty of bourbon, booze, vanilla, touch of smoke. Flavour is medium to heavy sticky sweet with a vicious alcohol burn. Body is full. Impressive beer, love the complex all over the place aroma, unfortunately it’s a bit too heavy for it’s own good and I found the alcohol burn rather too much. Curious, interesting one.

Flesje gedeeld door Bart. Amberkleurig bier met mooie schuimkraag die als een film blijft liggen. Aroma is rokerig en houtig maar heeft ook iets chemisch. Smaak is eveneens rokerig en houtig. De nasmaak heeft iets pittigs.

Bottle bought at the brouwcafe shop. Pours a lovely copper colour with very little head, tiny bit of sediment, otherwise clear. Aroma is a lot of fun, smokes paprika, sea salt, peated malt, brown sugar, prunes and fig. Big body. Flavour is sweet, with a touch of acidity but the level of sweetness cancels almost all of that. Saison wine - I dunno. Definitely a barley wine. Again lots of smoked paprika and peated barley, yet without overwhelming everything else. Remains very enjoyable at all times. Slight salty touch that plays really well with the smoke. Brown sugar, molasses, caramel, prune. Light bourbon and the accompanying vanilla. Finish is rather dry, lingering smoke and boozy warmth. This is excellent. Bought it because it sounded fun - and it really is! But more surprising is the excellent balance of flavours and the harmonious complexity that is achieved this way. Didn't try this when it was fresh but it has most certainly aged well. First class.

Robe orangée/ambrée assez sombre, bulles rares et mousse peu abondante et éphémère. Nez sur le bourbon, le bois, le vin cuit, touche fumée et côté iodé original et engageant. En bouche, la fumée, le vin, les fruits rouges mûrs et fruits confits attaquent, rattrapés par ce côté iodé/salin et une légèrement pimentée très agréable. Carbonatation faible, alcool présent mais pas trop malgré les 13.6% abv. Une belle réussite que cette collaboration !

Bottle. Brown color. Malt, caramel and smoke in the aroma. Full bodied. Malty sweer with caramel, bourbon, vanilla and peated smoke. Low on carbon. The balance is suboptimal, but the beer is alcoholic but Nice.

Bottled 26-02-2016. Salt, bourbon, smoked and smthwine-ish are all there, but the imperial saison must have run off. Very flakey, almost like drinking a snow globe. Flavorwise: salty! Followed by bourbon, biiig boozy note, warming, rich and malty sweet.
