American Wild Ale
A thoughtful ale brewed on the eve of the wedding of Art and Michelle Oestrike. The union of Jackie O’s founder and his beautiful bride was a celebration that brought Crooked Stave to Athens, Ohio. An opportunity to craft something unique and memorable, The Ties that Bind was brewed with barley, wheat, oats, and spelt. The wort was fermented in red wine barrels with a blend of our house souring cultures. After aging for 2 years on lees, a bright and assertive sour ale emerged with both depth and grace. This beer represents a convivial toast to unions large and small. Like marriage, an act of collaboration and admiration that will continue to develop and satisfy for years to come.

2017 bottle @ 6% ABV. Deep gold with a small white head. Aroma is floral and honeyed with brooding funk. Medium bodied. Moderately sour, not completely dry. Brioche, honey with spicy oak. Moody and engaging.

Bottle, bottled in 2017, tasted feb. 2024 bought at beergium clear to hazy yellow, large smooth white head Aroma of brett, funk, faint sweet fruits and leather. very mixed together, perhaps a bit like a sweetened gueuze. Flavor is bretty, funky, bit citrussy, bit sour and tart, wood, there is a very citric phenolic note in there but it is well pakced in and well hidden. pretty good sour but not over the top good. Well balanced, well composed. Has aged very well. I'm a big fan of crooked stave so perhaps i'm a bit tough on this one, just bc I'm used to their beers being better than this one on average.

0.375l bottle. Hazy golden body with a white head. The barrel character is evident in the beer in the form of mold and oak. It shows notes of lemon juice and vinegar too, but not super sour. Acetone is there as well. Carbonation is quite moderate. Complex beer, very nice.

(500ml bottle from boxbeers.dk) Lost my notes for this somewhere, quick review from memory. Quite clear golden pour with a small white head. Nose is rather sour and fruity, with notes of wine grapes, lemon, wine vinegar, lactic acid, wet wood, musty funk and a bit of yeast. Flavour is quite sour even compared to the nose, with biting tones of lemon juice and wine vinegar, crabapple, lactic acidity, wood, cereal grains and some yeast, lightly funky. Drying in the middle onwards but with lingering acidity, lots of tannin in the finish, dusty, lightly funky and yeasty. Light to medium bodied, low carbonation. Quite nice but a bit too acidic for me to find it very drinkable in volume.
