Black Berliner Weiss with Cherries

Bubbly Kriek has arisen from the depths of Bridgeport’s notorious south branch of the Chicago River. This super tart slightly funky cherry berliner weiss is ready for your imbibery. The grains for this beer are similar to a classic Berliner with a few pounds of roasted malts added to compliment the cherries and lactic acid tartness. This ‘Kriek’ isn’t a blend of young and old beers, but our fermentation left enough malt sugars in the beer to achieve a similar finish and tartness as the classic style.

From tap at Planet Oedipus 2018. Sweetish and tart cherry with some dark malt, fleshy cherry and lots of tart red fruits. Nicely tart and sour flavour, medium body (more body than you'd expect). Quite lovely, lots of tart and sweetish cherry with some welcome malts as well.

Super dark, brown and ruby-tinted body with a soft, very fast-dying pure white head and a great brow and oaky glow that shows through fairly nicely. Aroma of pure fresh cherries with some light yeast and malty backbone noticeable along with a dash of vinegar and very acidic notes towards the finish. Light-bodied; Very fresh and sharp cherry flavours dominate up front in much more of a fruit-beer or kriek type way, and definitely far removed from a Berliner Weisse in terms of quality and flavours. Aftertaste shows more of a refined and subdued cherry flavour with some light yeast notes, a touch of malt and grain and ending with a soft sweetness and a dash of vinegar and yeasts. Overall, a very well structured beer that shows much more elegantly than any Berliner Wesse that I've ever had, but also shows a nice cherry, yeast and vinegar profile that I didn't expect from this one, but is very nice to sample. Well worth trying to find if you like either style (Lambic/Kriek or Berliner) and don't mind paying the hefty price or flying back home with it in your suitcase! I sampled this 50 cL bottle purchased from West LakeView Liqours in Chicago, Illinois on 25-May-2016 for US$8,99 sampled at my house in Washington on 28-October-2018 in celebration of running the USMC Marathon for the eighth time with my wife who ran her fifth!

A deep dark brown ale with a thin white head. In aroma, sweet fruity malt with light cherries, lactic acid, Epsom salts, light Brett, very nice and smooth. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity malt with light ground cherry, light Brett, light lactic notes, very nice and complex.

Bottle thanks to Adam! Pours a clear deep ruby red with a near white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a combination of earthy wheat and tart cherries with a hint of sweetness underlying. Flavor is full of sour cherries with a nice pie tartness supporting and a hint of earthy wheat for the backbone.
