Dark brown strong ale (Pannepot) brewed for the 10th anniversary of "I'Abbaye des Saveurs," Lille, France. Imagine for a second you have a beer that is descent enough to age on an oak barrel that once carried wine made from Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel grapes. And if that isn't good enough, let that same audacious beer mature on a delicate style of Burgundy wine barrel, the essence of Pinot Noir to Nuits-St.-Georges, an appellation often known for darker, more tannic red wines. Right, I've got your attention now! Where some brewers blend, Struise married Burgundy & Malaga through the simultaneous maturation of Pannepot. A very limited edition was bottled as CapSoul in 75cl bottles. Enjoy

A Struise one-off, wine barrel aged variant of Pannepot; 75 cl vintage bottle (six years old) generously shared by Trevor, thanks man! Egg-white, cobweb-lacing, moussy, largely stable head over a misty, dark chestnut brown beer with mahogany hue. Aroma strongly oxidized, oxidized ‘rusty’ malts but more flattering maderisation as well making it interesting and inviting, over impressions of stewed plums, burnt brown sugar, ruby port, candied figs, hay, butterscotch, tomato concentrate, tea, dry tree leaves. Sweetish onset, candi sugary but not at all cloying, lots of fig- and dried plum-like flavours with a soft sourish undercurrent, medium carbonation, full and rounded body. Pleasantly walnutty, caramelly and brown bready maltiness with a thin, softly bitterish toasty edge, herbal tea-ish hop bitterish tail with lots of warming but non-astringent, port-like alcohol, some drying woody tannins and retronasal old sherry-like oxidation – but wine tartness, which I would expect to be pronounced in a beer that has spent three years in wine barrels, remains an altogether soft background factor. Has all the attractive properties of regular Pannepot with woodiness and maderisation added to the whole, but I would not have minded more wine tartness in the finish; too old already as well, since oxidation was surprisingly prominent. Still glad I tasted this, had heard of it before but never managed to find a bottle. Classic Struise style, I’d say.
