Draught from Habitat. Clooudy caramel brown. Light lacing. Strange herbally taste. Some caramel malts but not good really. Not sure what went wrong.

Notes from June 2011 Another fine mess... Best by Sept 2011 notch. So far, so good. Ommegang anniversary glass. Pours out an unexpectedly dark amber/iced-tea color. Filtered. A moderate inch of off-white, filmy head comes & goes without much enthusiasm. Zesty orange scent. More like tangerine & honey. Doughy. A bit like spice cake. A bit wit-like. Brown sugar, & a delicate rind, (& more so pronounced)dry leafy green hop character. Taste is very juicy. Tropical sweetness, tangerine bitterness, somewhat green. Not much in your face bitterness actually, but it always hums on your tongue to a constant pulse. More dry-hopping then straight boiling is my guess. Mildly zesty. Slight(slight), candied afterthought along the belly. A touch resiny. Mildly toasty. Finish is a mellow leafy green. Feel is of a constant froth. Soft, but supple carbonation. Body is moderate, but mostly dry. Aside from the alcohol & color, it comes off more like a Belgian Pale. A great Belgian Pale. :)

On tap at Tarrants on 05/17/2011. Clear copper amber body with a small creamy white head. Swwet caramel, fruit, light sulfur and spice aroma. sweet fruit, spice, and light sulfur flavor. Medium body with moderate carbonation.

12 ounce bottle. Dark amber orange color. Bubbly beige head. Fruity toasted malt nose with fragrant citrus hops. Bittersweet malt/hop flavor. Tangy fruitiness, like mango and pineapple. Nice balance. Long spicy bitter hop finish.

Del Ray Pizzeria, Alexandria VA tap ($6.50): Pours a muddy light brown with a beige head. Aroma is dark fruit on one hand and very mild IPA on the other hand, so there is a bit of hops and mostly malts. I suppose that this is a different, darker take on a Belgian IPA (i.e. going with a dubbel base instead of a saison or light singel or tripel). Kind of sweet. This was a very conservative attempt somewhat. I thought it was reasonably sessionable though. Pretty good.

35cl Bottle, thanks Harmen&Kevin! Slightly hazy dark amber colour, off white head. Aroma of sweet ripe fruits, yeast, dark fruits, toasted malts, nice. Flavour is medium sweet, fruity, yeast, dark fruits, light dry chocolate note, bitter grassy and pine hop finish. Medium bodied. Good beer, tasty.

Cask @ Max’s Taphouse, Baltimore, MD. Pours a clear amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty hoppy aroma with piney hints. Fruity malty hoppy bitter piney flavor with yeasty hints. Has a fruity malty spicy hoppy finish.

Growler from Whole Foods Market, Charlottesville, VA, opened 5/15/11. Pours a clear dark auburn color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of bitter earthy hops and lots of fruit notes including cherry and plum. The taste is citrus and tropical hop notes with a bit of caramel, spice and some dark fruits in the finish. Medium bodied. Quite nice.

12 ounce bottle, best by Sept, 2011. Pours crystal clear reddish orange color with a fairly dense 2 finger off white head with good retention that reduces to a decent lacing cap. Some lacing sticks to the glass as you drink as well. Aromas of big spicy yeast; with some citrus, bubblegum, and banana notes underneath. Some nice and interesting aromas, with good strength. Taste of big spicy yeast, banana, bubblegum, clove, citrus, and pine. Decent amount of bitterness on the finish that lingers with banana, bubblegum, and spicy flavors. Medium carbonation and body. Also has a bit of a creamy mouthfeel. Decent balance of flavors. No alcohol in the taste or finish, well masked for the alcohol level. Very easy drinkability for the alcohol level, very smooth. Overall a very nice Belgian IPA. I would have it again.

12oz bottle. Amber-orange color, dulled brown. Thin oily head. Pleasant interplay between the Belgian yeast and piny hops in the aroma. Surprisingly balanced, almost has some Belgian Amber tones going on. Fruity, sugary, not as dry or bitter as most Belgian IPAs. Fruity through and through, some light raisin and pungent fruit tones. Perhaps doesn’t really capture the essence of the style, but an interesting Ameri-Belgo beer nonetheless.
