We brewed a small pilot batch of this beer as the hops we use are particularly difficult to source. Galaxy is from Australia, Motueka and Nelson Sauvin from New Zealand. We only have enough hops to brew this beer twice in 2014! We’re hoping to be able to get more of these hops for 2015, but we’re still working on that.
The beer itself has a smooth malt profile, as oats and a little light caramel balance out the bitterness. IBUs come in at 54, I increased them a little from the pilot batch to crisp up the finish of the beer. The hop profile of this beer is what it’s all about - passionfruit, lemon and lime, and white wine. Distinctly different to the standard c-hopped IPA. It comes in at 8.0% ABV.
And the name - Expat IPA? An expatriate is to withdraw (oneself) from residence in or allegiance to one’s native country. Given this brew has hops from Australia and New Zealand, and is supported by a British Ale yeast strain which provides great complimentary fruity esters, Expat seemed like a natural choice. And, after all, I’m a British expat myself...

07/19/18, important to note expats in this political climate, good resiny flavors, hop forward, bitter, and not afraid. Slight malt notes too.

Tasting at SF’s
Hazy dark blond color. Bready aroma with resiny hops, armpit. Crisp and dry body, crackery malts, this is the right base for such beers, and the sweetness is very limited; the hopping is resiny, a bit vegetable, mild dank and a touch of bitter oranges.
Excellent IIPA.

650ml bottle at Brian’s office. Pours a hazy pal3 folden with a white head. Aroma is tropical fruits, slightly dank. Same taste with piney aftertaste. Good stuff.

22 oz. bottle, pours a cloudy copper golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out piney hops, sweet caramel, cereal malt, and light resinous oils. Flavour is along the same lines, with piney hops, some light sweet cereal malts and crisp biscuity malt. Balanced well, with a nice piney hops and cereal malt on the finish. Very well-constructed. Excellent.

Hazy, tan. No head. The nose is fairly bright, with some papaya notes, a fair bit of thick pale malt that’s almost a bit doughy. On the palate, it’s got moderate bitterness, then those same fruit notes come through. Just a touch of alcohol. Not bad.

On tap at Hop-Scotch, Tokyo. Scant head, hazy amber, bit yellowish. Fresh and resiny nose that is followed with a full, rich and resiny body. Feels heavy but the heaviness is mainly from hops and oils coming from hops. Lots of beautiful tropical fruits in the taste, overripe mango, passionfruit, you name it. Sweet malt backbone and nice bittersweet hoppy tingle, together with fruits in the finish. Great stuff.

Draft - Sweet and bitter pink grapefruit. Clear gold with rich white head. Grapefruit and orange peel with a nice sweetness. Very fruity and a light balanced bitterness. Nice.
