Bottle at home. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel, toffee, sweet dried fruits, candy sugar, some spicy notes, touch of liquorice. Flavour is strong cloying sweetness. Some booze in the finish. Body is medium, bit sticky. Almost like a Belgian Strong Ale and not the kind I like. Too heavy on the sweetness for my taste.

Barleywine from this Frisian microbrewery (northern Netherlands), bought online. Mousy, yellowish beige, medium thick, slowly breaking and dissipating head on a misty chocolate brown beer with burgundy hue. Aroma of ground and lightly toasted hazelnuts, wet toast, dried cranberries, tea, hard caramel, chicken soup (likely a sign of oxidation but not in the most elegant way), old cookies, chervil, beetroot, raw red cabbage, apple peel. Sweet onset but nowhere sticky, dried fig, cranberries, softishly carbonated with smooth - yet not sufficiently vinous - mouthfeel; walnutty and brown-bready, toasty maltiness, sweet with a strongly developed bittering tail, the latter lightly accentuated by herbal hoppiness reminiscent of thyme and herb tea, while this 'soupy' chervil effect lingers about, accentuating the 'green herb' experience a bit. Warming, 'jenever'-ish alcohol in the finish, lingering bittersweet nutty malts and some dried fruit. Too 'soupy', but otherwise certainly not an unpleasant beer; it does, however, much more resemble a Scotch (Belgian style) than a true barleywine for me...

Bottle @ home. Clear dark red color, average sized off-white to beige head that diminishes fairly quickly. Smell and taste lightly malts, sweet, brown candy sugar, caramel. Decent to medium body, decent carbonation. Ok beer.

Clear amber brown colour, small fizzy beige head, mostly diminishing, minimal lacing. Aroma roasted malts, caramel, treacle, palm sugar, dried dark fruits, alchol. Taste light heavy sweet and slightly bitter, malty, roasty, dark fruits, spicy notes, alcohol. Sweetbitter aftertaste, roasty and spicy notes, alcohol. Medium body, watery to oily texture, soft carbonation, not bad but feels not well-balanced and too boozy.

33cl Bottle from Vonk. Only poured 2/3rds, I didn’t want any of the horrible NHB yeasty shit in the glass. Clear ruby brown colour, thin beige head. Aroma of booze, sweet dark malts, dark fruits, prunes, figs, brown sugar, brandy, hint of cinnamon. Flavour is sweet, alcoholic, malty, dark fruits, brandy, cinnamon, hint of gingerbread, alcoholic bittersweet finish. Medium bodied. More a quad or dark BSA imho, but this was far better than expected.

Hazy deep red - amber beer, tidy cream colour head. Palate is airy, semi dry and has modest fine carbonation. Smooth malts, some caramel. Ripe fruits. Fair dollop of spicy esters, too much really, gives an awkward overall taste. Soft finish. Respectable but loadsa headroom for improvement.

33cl bottle courtesy of and shared with Kermis. Very thin off white head. Cloudy amber pour. Too herbal. Not a great barley wine . Nice name though
