“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Draft - Oh so chocolaty, medium bitter sweet. Opaque black with a brown thin head. Tastes like it smells with a nice mid bitterness and long bitter sweet finish, kinda like Quick Chocolate Syrup in a good way. Lovely beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

3/III/13 - 1Pt. 6Fl. Oz. bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent) @ home (2013-214)
Clear dark brown beer, solid irregular brown to beige head, pretty stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: lots of chocolate milk, caramel, vanilla, sugary, dark chocolate, chocolate spread. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body, creamy texture. Taste: lots and lots of chocolate, wow, it's no lie! some caramel, vanilla, dark chocolate mousse, bit sweet, but not too much. Aftertaste: dark chocolate, cocoa powder, some bitter hops, if not much, more caramel, chocolate, bit sugary, hint of mocha, not a lot though.

Refrigerated brown bomber poured into a snifter. Pours black with small light brown head which dissapates quickly. A little lacing, dark chocolate aroma. medium body, medium/low carbonation, and creamy texture. Taste is chocolate, some herbal hops, and bitter dry finish. Alcohol is pretty well covered, but expected better flavor.

From a 22 oz bottle shared with friends. Pours black with a distinctive reddish tan head. Chocolate aroma. Flavors of chocolate, vanilla, cherries with a bitter vanilla aftertaste. Quite unusual. Quite nice.

22 ounce bottle. Opaque dark brown color topped by a small creamy tan head. Rich sweet chocolate truffle aroma smells like fresh baked brownies. Flavor upfront is bittersweet chocolate malt. Hints of espresso and herbal hops. Mid taste is bitter hops and roasted malt. Finishes with a long dry peppery swan song.

65 cl bottle @ Olutravintola Konttori. Rated on 26.02.2010
Aroma has lots of chocolate(!), some coffee notes and hints of licorice. Flavour has semi‐dark chocolate, some coffee notes, hints of sugar and vanilla. Exactly what it promises to be: a chocolate overdose. Luckily the chocolate feels real and has not those artifical essence aromas.

Bottle from midtown east whole foods to enjoy Patriots week 17 game. Pours dark brown with one finger beige head that quickly dissapates. Nose is chocolate but not super strong. I was afraid this would be cloyingly sweet but it isn’t. Tastes of bitter dark chocolate, resin, chalk, earth, light cough syrup, vanilla, wood, and finishes rather floral and medicinal. It is a touch sweet and drying.

2nd rate - same bottle next day
I’m getting a bit more dark fruits in the taste (may have oxidised slightly overnight). Aroma is intense chocolate but sort of closer to Hershey’s Chocolate rather than rich Belgian chocolate. It is sweet chocolate syrup - but it isn’t an very expensive chocolate smell. It is pretty 1 dimensional to be honest. It has a yummy sweet chocolately flavour but I’m feeling it’s a tad gimmicky. No doubt it has the most intensely flavoured chocolate in any beer. There isn’t a lot of imperial stout character coming through due to the massive amount of chocolate. Everyone should try this beer...it IS really good, but a world class beer in the top 100? No. 4.0
Bottle from The Bottle Shop, Canterbury 251212 10% abv 9494/16/4.1
Jet black, dark tan head that dissipates to thin layer, light lacing
Aroma - Massive chocolate syrup aroma, huge sweet chocolate, touch of deep dark sweet malts, hint of alcohol
Taste - Massive mix of plain and milk chocolate syrups, chocolate fudge cake, underneath there is mellow deep dark roasted malts, touch of dark fruits, mainly big time chocolate, not over sweet, touch of alcohol. Not a complex beer, here the intention is to make it has chocolatey as possible, however it can make it seem rather 1-dimensional
Palate - Soft carb, full body, oily texture. Palate is sweet, it’s a dessert beer. Finish as main flavour, big time chocolate syrup with an underlying mellow roast imperial stout with some warming alcohol
Overall - It’s the best chocolate taste in an imperial stout and I can’t see it being bettered or made even more intense. There is so much chocolate in here it’s ridiculous but it’s not overly sweet and sickly to make it unpalatable. Definately a dessert beer - good with high quality chocolate ice-cream. Yum yum yum....but best shared and drunk in small quantites up to 1/2 bottle per person otherwise it can get a bit sickly (Initially I rated it 4.5 with first sips then with the drinking it dropped to 4.1) Still a great flavoured impy!
