“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

7/11/8/12/13/11

Bottle. Pours pitch black with a small brown head that dissipates slowly with nice lacing. Aroma is milk chocolate, vanilla, light mint. Flavor is about the same, sweet with a light bitter coffee backing. Gets more and more bitter as you drink, and not in a great way. Medium bodied. Very desert like. Decent, but not as good as its ratings.

#1500 Rating. 650 ml. bomber split with & THX. to Kraddel. Going by Creme Brulee Stout experiences opted to get this one pretty much down to room temperature and let it breath for 10 or so. Minutes before drinking. Pours black with a mocha head that remains only on the sides. Smell and taste do not disappoint, this is exactly what you would expect from ST for something like this. Smell is pure soft chocolate, like foreign made / sold Belgian chocolate, chocolate truffles and light mouse, soft, very full, milk chocolate, light nuts and hint very sweet coffee. Taste is pretty much tat, full soft, mid. Class foreign made / sold Belgian chocolate, chocolate truffles and light mouse, milk chocolate, very sweet chocolate-like chestnuts, milky mocha. Pure chocolate, only complaint is that I would liked to have a bit higher quality chocolate than this but… yeah. Low carb. soft creamy, light chocolate milk body. Lovely text on the label and Mayan sculpture / drawing, should have used that as the cover.

Sample at SBWF 2012. Black with a minimal head. I guess this is a beer that you either hate or love, I liked it a lot. Very sweet with chocolate, almost like chocolate pudding. Also with roasted malt and some vanilla. A funny and very special beer. But I could never finish a bottle by myself, way to much.

Tap at the Cask, Pimlico - 28/09/12. Mid black with a thin mocha head that soon clears to the edges. Big chocolate nose, sweet malt, milk chocolate. Taste follows nose exactly. Fuller end of medium bodied with a smooth oily texture.

Bottle @ Man in the Moon. Very dark colour with a dark head. Smells like chocolate. Tastes like chocolate. If you are looking for a beer that is like molten chocolate, look no further. If you want any trace of beer flavour, keep looking.

On tap @ Craft Beer c.o, London. Black as a knight with a small sidesticking tan head. The aroma is just what the name suggest! My god this is vanilla-chocolaty! Just like opening a chocolate wrapper and inhaling the trapped-in air that comes out. Is this actually liquefied chocolate? Tons of cocoa also, and I'm almost speechless this was so much sweet chocolate in this one.. Let's try it: it's much more subtle at first in the taste than I had expected (thank god) Not so sweet, but still tons of chocolate wrapped in a thick and oily texture. Low on the bitterness, and it's almost a bit grassy in the finish. This is a true interesting experiment. Right down the same alley as the Creme Brulee. 21.07.2012

Bottle. Medium head with medium duration. Color is black. Aroma and taste are rich chocolate, roast malt and then again more chocolate in the finish. Great taste.

The chocolate is light at first then gradually becomes bitter-sweet before morphing into a smooth milky finish.
