“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bottle drank at home from Craft Beer Co, Not a stout lover but this was great you can really taste the chocolate. If I could find this locally I would try it again. £16 for a bomber was a drunken purchase. Food Accompaniment: Chocolate quail eggs

Bottle. Pours pitch black, with a full, creamy head. This is pure, liquid chocolate and the aroma does not argue with that; it’s chocolate and cocoa. The body is full and creamy, with a moderate to soft carbonation. No alcoholic notes whatsoever, which is quite a feat considering the ABV on this monster. The flavour is not surprisingly sweet, as… well chocolate. Nice malty character, with a good sweet bitterness. It’s by no means a bad brew, but it’s a bit too over the top chocolatey for my liking. That is, it’s nice if you like chocolate. And I do, by all means. But then again you could maybe just buy a chocolate instead.

A almost black beer with a dense, beautiful, brown and medium head. Sweet, strong and nice chocolate dominates the aroma, also some roastiness, salt liquirice and cocoa. Good and enjoyable aroma despites of almost only chocolate aroma. Taste is well controlled, lots of chocolate, liquirice, some roastiness and drying herball hops in the aftertaste. Chocolate is more dominant when temperature is about how it was recommended, more balanced when warmer. Full- bodied, smooth and low carbonation. Lots of chocolate, still nicely balanced, however, quite sweet beer. Weird but still succesfull beer.

650 ml bottle courtesy of Jonas (non-RB). Pours black with a very small mocha head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace. Smell is sweet with milk chocolate, vanilla, roasted malts, toffee and hints of orange zest and pine. Taste is sweet and tiny metallic with dark chocolate, vanilla, toffee, fudge, burnt caramel, grass, orange peal, alcohol and hints of sweet liquorice. Mouthfeel is smooth, creamy, silky and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet and bitter with dark chocolate, burnt caramel, orange peal, pine and alcohol.

Medium brown head. Nearly opaque black body goes deep dark red at edges, with visible carbonation. Chocolatey milky toffee aroma with roasty bubble gum notes. Sweet-dryish roasty chocolatey taste with vanilla fudge notes. Full-bodied. Mild, smooth mouthfeel. Dryish roasty butterscotch aftertaste with vanilla fudge, chocolate, and resin notes. Nice, mellow, and scarily drinkable for something that’s 11%. It’s a real effort to sip this as slowly as I need to. (0.65l bottle, wine monopoly, Vika, Oslo.)

Bottle as shown. Pours a dark brown ruby hue with small beige head. Huge chocolate aroma and cocoa. Thin mouthfeel with chocolate milk flavor and light roast. Wow this was a tremendous imperial stout hiding alcohol extremely well. Really enjoyed this one.
