“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bomber. Pours inky black with a medium collapsing tan head that leaves a ring. Aroma is super strong in choklat--in fact that’s all I smell. Taste is bittersweet and is like biting into a chocolate bar. Carbonation is medium and the body is full; mouthfeel is syrupy. Best chocolate beer ever.

Smells heavily of chocolate. I’ve had a lot of coffee-like imperial stouts recently, so its nice to have the variety. Tastes really unique - like thick melted milk chocolate on the tongue. The taste of alcohol is almost abest, totally overridden by the malty chocolate. Very good. Bottle at Castro’s.

16/04/2011 Roma Chocolate (tap). Corpo pieno, consistenza cremosa. Non così bilanciata e alla lunga stucchevole.

22oz bomber from Pick’s poured into a shaker. Pours dark black with a thin ring of dark tan head. Aroma of dark and milk chocolate with a little coffee and vanilla. Taste is light sweet and light bitter. Chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Full bodied with a creamy texture. Lively carbonation and a long chocolate finish. Overall, pretty good. Definitely perfect for this time of year.

Amongst all the craft brews I flew up from Ontario, this one had the highest hopes. At 9.1celsius, it pours with a jet black body and a hint of cherry red with only a tiny layer of head on top. The aroma is deep coffee and chocolate, not overpowering but extremely inviting. The flavour is an assault of chocolate with a dark coffee finish - wow. A great mix, strong and very sweet. Not for sucking back, but for sipping, this is a great liqueur-style beer that can act as a dessert in itself. And no hint of the eleven percent - extra points for that!

Bottle shared with Steve and co, courtesy of Steve. Thanks! Deep black appearance with a creamy tan head. Very rich chocolate bar aroma that literally smells just like a Hershey’s bar. Very tasty cocoa/chocolate bar flavor with some toasty malts, vanilla, light espresso, caramel but mostly just a rich chocolate bar flavor. Another tasty one from ST but too rich to be enjoyed on your own.

Bottle @ Uni bar, Århus. Pours pitch black with a tan head. Aroma is huge chocolate aromas as soon as the bottle opens, both milk and dark chocolate, nuts, caramel. Taste is malt, huge dark and milk chocolate flavors, caramel, hints of dark fruit, raisins, nuts. Full body, low soft carbonation. In short this is floating chocolate cake, impressive and lovely, but a bomber gets abit to much for me. 151011

RBESG Sheffield 2009 Grand Tasting at the Harlequin. Deep brown with some red hue, light off-white head. Aroma of milk choc, very very intense. A chocorgasm in taste, milk chocolate, mixed with that choc sirup you put on ice creams. A bit artificial though.Medium body

A nice find at the LCBO for my girlfriend. Now written 9.5% ABV on the front painted label. Wow... full cocoa nose ! Pours a really dark brown colour with very little red highlights. The head is full, brown-coloured, lasts a long time and creates decent lacing. Other than cocoa, the aromas are loaded with caramel and butterscotch. Hints of nuts, coffee, roasted malts, burnt wood and molasses. Silky mouthfeel with a bitter-dry finish. Flavours of chocolate, not as sweet as the nose gave out to be, but more on the bitter 85% chocolate. Notes of coffee, molasses and light licorice. Quite an awesome brew, great for desert and close to the Rogue Chocolate one.
