“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Thanks Jon for the bottle share! Pours a deep black with a small tan head that lingers for a bit. Light pepper aromas with milk chocolate, cacao nibs and dark roasted coffee. Taste is fairly well balanced between roasted espresso and dark chocolate. Dry coffee forward finish that lingers. --- Beer aliased from original tick of Blackwater Series: Mokah on 10 Dec 2015 at 22:20 - Score: 8

Poured into a wine glass showing light coffee rims with half a finger of latte colored foam. The nose shows a lot of green pepper and vegetal notes. Upon warming up, a lot of generous chocolate notes appear. The palate is lightly carbonated and medium bodied. Flavors of very light sweet chocolate, light flavors of dark roasted malts and a dark cacao bitterness on the finish.

Bottle. Milk chocolate, coffee, malt, and straw aroma. Dark brown with nice tan head. Sweet chocolate milk, malt, and bitter herbal coffee and hay flavor. Nice body. Sweet but not a sugar bomb like the Creme Brulee - excellent.

Bottle from Epsom Circle Market, Epsom, NH. Aroma is rich chocolate without discernible coffee. No alcohol smell despite 10% ABV. Appearance is opaque black with moderate, off-white crinkling head with good lacing and fair retention. Taste is medium sweet chocolate dominant over lightly bitter coffee long finish (If I’m being picky, perhaps the only fault is the interplay between the two could be more complex). Palate is medium-bodied, creamy with perfect amount of carbonation to enhance the flavor rather than compete with it. Overall, this beer is pretty awesome. A nice chocolatey treat without being overly sweet. I’m trying to savor it but am already anticipating my second pour.

Bottle at home. 3 years old. Has a dark to black colour with a small beige head. The aroma is dominated by chocolate truffles, dark chocolate, candy, roasted malt and some coffee and alcohol. The flavour has more coffee, dark chocolate and is quite rich. Has a slick and silky mouth feel, and a solid bitterness. Both heavy aroma and taste. The aroma is sweet and the flavour is pretty bitter.
