“The ancients called it ‘food for the gods’“
The Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya, unfolds a complex web of mystery around a beverage known as xocoatl (ch-co-atle). At Southern Tier, we’re not surprised that hieroglyphs of the ancient Maya depict chocolate being poured for rulers and gods. Even through the many voyages of Columbus, the mystical bean remained nothing more than a strange currency of the native peoples. Moving through centuries, the circular journey of cacao has been realized in our brewing house, encompassing the complexity of the darkest, bitter-sweet candy together with the original frothy cold beverage of the ancient Maya to bring to you our Blackwater Series Choklat Stout. We have combined the finest ingredients to tempt your senses & renew the power & interrelation of history in every bottle.

Bottle, picked up in Alabama. Pours opaque black with a large cremay brown head that has great staying power and really nice lacing. Aroma is pretty room filling, tons and tons of chocolate, some coffee in there as well, but mostly chocolate. Flavor is, yep, fully sweet, medium bitterness. Tons of chocolate, both baking chocolate and milk chocolate, some coffee flavors, but pretty subdued. Medium plus body, some creaminess. Plenty of lingering bitterness. Manages to hit you hard with chocolate without getting crazy artificial like Rogue Double Chocolate. Not a 100 point beer, but pretty solid if you are looking for dessert.

(650mL bottle from LCBO, ~1.5yo) Pours black with a moderate tan head and no lace. Aroma cocoa, milk and dark chocolate, a bit of dark roast coffee bitterness (faded?), pretty sweet and malty with a little vanilla - chocolate rules all though. On the palate, quite sweet initially, loads of chocolate both milk and dark, dark malts, toffee. Some roast bitterness, black coffee and cacao, chocolate continues. Finish has a fair amount of black coffee/roast bitterness, some alcohol heat, pretty sweet but also a bit dusty. Body medium-full and a bit oily, carb soft. When cool this beer was totally chocolate dominated with quite light roast and little coffee, but balanced out more when it warmed and the roast came up. I imagine the cellaring time dulled some flavors but it seems to be nice and harmonious. Dessert beer for sure, and might be too much when fresh, but rich and tasty with some time on it.

Bottle from the LCBO. Pours almost black with a small dark khaki head that is soon gone leaving a ring. Nose is dominated by chocolate with coffee a close second; lesser notes of vanilla, caramel, orange rind and a definite alcohol background. Taste is only lightly sweet at the start with the coffee and cocoa bitterness quickly becoming the focus before some more light sweetness appears in the finish. Mouth is full and creamy with soft carbonation and a lasting warming finish.

22 oz. bottle purchased at cigarette City, Seabrook, NH. Dark black color, thin white head. Aroma is off the chain chocolate and coffee grounds. Hints of cocoa powder.

Th flavor is rich and deep with chocolate, espresso, sugar and hints of vanilla. This is a sweet stout, no doubt about it but it does have a bitter element that helps cut some of the sweetness. It also has a light warming heat after the sip without the alcohol flavor. Creamy texture with a fuller body. This really is a awesome Impy stout for the price, $8.99. Highly drinkable dessert, imperial stout.

Reviewed from notes.
This was poured into a snifter and a pint glass. There weren’t any significant differences in either one.
The appearance was a nice dark brown close to brown colored body with a decent one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipated within about thirty seconds. There was some light lacing here and there in a messiness of sorts.
The smell had a nice rolling bittersweet cocoa bean to roasty ground coffee bean hovering over top of some light vanilla.
The taste was sweet all the way and pervades inside of a light roastiness that allows the vanilla to combine very nicely. There is a long lingering roasty to sweet milk chocolate aftertaste that lead to a dry finish.
On the palate, this one sat right at a medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it.
Overall, what a nice imperial stout to have again.
