Our Friends over at Kentucky's own Willett Distillery have one kind of barrel: wood. And they put two things in them: Bourbon and Rye. We were fortunate enough to get some of their Rye barrels, and we put our Imperial Stout in them. It's chocolatey, coffee-y, smoky, Rye-y beast of a barrel-aged thing. Word.

Bottle at home. Opaque black color, small brown colored head. Aroma and flavor are malts, light dark malts and roast, nicely bitter, some umami notes. Decent body and firm carbonation. Nice.

Booze smoothes over as you consume. Bourbon, chocolate. Very good. Especially on a 9Β° night.

Bottle sent by Lagunitas for comment. I needed to pour this pretty full before it would kick up any head, and there it is, tan and rather short-lived. Solid black body, and a very heady alcohol nose. Smell has some strong coffee to it, but it’s more of a roast note that goes with the black malt rather then blending with the alcohol like Kahlua. Taste is also quite strong, and sticky. Toasty coffee blends with the black malt. Yes, deep and roasty, but the overall effect is quite smooth. Good dessert or holiday sampling beer.

Bottle from Craft Brewed. Pours a deep brown to black with a finger of beige head that lingers. Big whisky forward nose: tobacco, oak, vanilla, chocolate, tea and caramel. Lots of whisky on the palate, peat, faint smoke and coffee. A big roasty finish, with coffee flavors abound. Pretty awesome for the price. Nice stuff.
